10. + Defined as … A journal club has been defined as an educational meeting in which a group of individuals discuss current articles, providing a forum for a collective effort to keep up with the literature.

11. + Main idea of the Journal Club… For nurses in Transplant and Nephrology across South Wales to get together to chat, have coffee and discuss /debate articles research / issues around Transplant and Nephrology; Not just for Staff Nurse but Health Care Support Workers as well; Students are also welcome; Members of the medical and surgical team are also welcome!

13. + Advantages of the Renal Journal Club There are many advantages of participating in a journal club, and for the Renal Journal Club we hope to: Keeping abreast of new knowledge; Promoting awareness of current nursing research findings; learning to critique and appraise research; Becoming familiar with the best current clinical research; Encouraging research utilisation.

General structure… Meet once a month; Session will last approx 2 hours; Start with a 45 minute presentation from a guest speaker; Have a coffee break; Break off into groups ( by yourself) and discuss the presentation / topic / research articles; Meet back as a group and all able to discuss findings. Reflect on the outcome of the Journal Club Meeting!

22. + Ausubel Ausubel known for the advance organizer. This is a tool to help students integrate new information with their existing knowledge, leading to meaningful learning. Ausubel believed that it was important to provide a preview of information to be learned by providing information on the topic areas and enabling a bigger picture to start.

24. + Q: How can we measuring gain from the Journal Club? A: Reflection Reflection ~ turning experience into learning. Using a tool such as a reflection for this Journal Club can enabling members to learn from their experience of working in renal and the issues presented with. Reflection as a means of learning is not new. Kolb’s experiential learning theory argued that learners go through a four stage cycle which begins with a concrete experience which is reflected upon and from which abstract concepts are developed which can then be tested.
