Before the SAT: Know what to expect. Types of questions and number of questions Understand the directions. Take the time to carefully read through and understand the directions before the test. This way, you don’t have to waste time reading them during the test.

Start your mental preparation the day before the test. Get a good night’s sleep. Have everything that you need for the test ready the night before. Set your alarm clock and get there on time. If you are late, you can’t take the test.

There are two different types of questions on the Mathematics SAT. Multiple-choice44 questions Student-produced response10 questions (grid-ins) Total:54 questions 70 minutes (two 25-minute sections and one 20-minute section)

There are 10 strictly timed sections on the SAT. 1. Viewpoint Essay (25 min.) 2. ? (25 min.) 3. ? (25 min.) 4. ? (25 min.) 5. ? (25 min.) 6. ? (25 min.) 7. ? (25 min.) 8. ? (20 min.) 9. ? (20 min.) 10. Writing (10 min.) Two of these sections will be math sections. One multiple- choice only and the other mixed between multiple-choice and grid-in questions. One of these sectons will be a math section containing only multiple chioice questions. There will also be an experimental section in this group. The experimental section does not count toward your grade, but there is no way of telling which section is the experimental section.

The sections could be set up as follows: 1. Viewpoint Essay (25 min.) 2. Math (multiple-choice only) (25 min.) 3. Critical Reading (25 min.) 4. Writing (25 min.) 5. Experimental Section (25 min.) 6. Math (Multiple-Choice and Grid-in) (25 min.) 7. Writing (25 min.) 8. Math (multiple-choice only) (20 min.) 9. Critical Reading (20 min.) 10. Writing (10 min.)

Or it could be set up like this. 1. Viewpoint Essay (25 min.) 2.Critical Reading 3. Math (multiple-choice and Grid-in) (25 min.) 4. Critical Reading (25 min.) 5. Writing (25 min.) 6. Experimental Section (25 min.) 7. Math (Multiple-Choice only) (25 min.) 8.Critical Reading (20 min.) 9.Math (multiple-choice only) (20 min.) 10. Writing (10 min.)

Directions: For this section, solve each problem and decide which is the best of the choices given. Fill in the corresponding circle on the answer sheet. You may use any available space for scratchwork. Instructions: N o t e s a n d R e f e r e n c e I n f o r m a t i o n w i l l b e t h e s a m e f o r a l l t h r e e m a t h s e c t i o n s.

Notes 1. The use of a calculator is permitted. 2. All numbers used are real numbers. 3.Figures that accompany problems in this test are intended to provide information useful in solving the problems. They are drawn as accurately as possible EXCEPT when it is stated in a specific problem that the figure is not drawn to scale. All figures lie in a plane unless otherwise indicated. 4. Unless otherwise specified, the domain of any function f is assumed to be the set of all real numbers x for which f(x) is a real number.

Timing. The SAT math sections consist of 20 multiple- choice problems in 25 minutes, 8 multiple- choice problems and 10 grid-in problems in 25 minutes, and 16 multiple-choice problems in 20 minutes. You have a total of 70 minutes to complete 54 problems; an average of about 1½ minutes per problem.

Scoring: Multiple-choice questions: Correct answers = 1 point each Incorrect answer = -¼ point each Blank answer = 0 points Student-produced response questions (grid-in): Correct answers = 1 point each Nothing is subtracted for wrong answers. If the final score includes a fraction, the score is rounded to the nearest whole number.

A statistical process will be used to scale your score from 200 (lowest) to 800 (highest). Average scores are about 500. Only one of three scores will pertain to math, so your total combined score will be between 600 (lowest) and 2400 (highest). Average combined score is about 1500. Along with your scaled score, you will receive an SAT percentile score. This score compares your performance to other students who took the test.

Playing Group General Play Each team will start the game with 50 points. A team is randomly chosen to go first, and begins the game by selecting a category and point value (e.g. “Algebra and Functions for 20 points"). The host then reads the clue, after which any player on any team can buzz in.

The board will look like this: So let’s say the first group picks Number and Operations for 10 points.

1.A question will be projected onto an overhead screen and also read by teacher. If no team responds to the question after 3 minutes, the question will be tossed out and not replaced by another question. Jeopardy Rules 2.As soon as a team completes a problem, a designated team captain will write the answer on the small notepad provided, buzz in, and immediately hand the answer to the teacher. It must be noted that no team may continue to work on the problem once they have buzzed in. 3.Before any answers are revealed, all other teams will have an additional 60 seconds to complete the problem and give the answer to the teacher at or before the end of the 60 seconds. Correct answers will earn half the point value for that particular question.

Jeopardy Rules 4.Only the team that buzzed in first will be eligible to receive the full value of the question if the answer given is correct. However, if the team that buzzed in first is wrong, they will be penalized the full value of the question. (Only the team that buzzed in first is in jeopardy of losing points, the other teams will not lose points for incorrect answers.) 5.The answer will be displayed before the next question is chosen. The team that buzzes in first and gets the question correct will choose the next question. (If the team that buzzes in answers the question incorrectly, the team that chose that question will stay in control of the board and select the next question.)

Let’s try a sample question Number and Operations for 10 points. Ready?

Number and Operations – 10 If it takes ½ hour to wash a car, how many days will it take to wash 96 cars? (A)2(B) 6(C) 12 (D) 24(E) 48

Number and Operations – 10 Answer: 96 cars x ½ hour = 48 hours 48 hours ÷ 24 hours per day = 2 days A

The game will continue until there is about 5-10 minutes left in class. We will start…

6.Any team with zero or negative points will be disqualified from final jeopardy. (in subsequent rounds, teams with zero or negative scores will start with ½ the score of the team with the least amount of positive points) 7.Each team will be given an index card for final jeopardy. One side of the index card will have a grid-in answer box and the other side will have a space for students to write the amount of points they wish to wager on the question. The teacher will reveal the topic for the final jeopardy question and each team will have 20 seconds to write the amount of points they want to wager on the question. (Teams can wager anywhere from zero to half of their total number of points.) Final Jeopardy Rules

9.Once all wagers are made, the teacher will reveal the final Jeopardy question. Teams will have 2 minutes to answer the question using the grid-in box. At the end of 2 minutes, the teacher will collect each card and check each answer and wager. 10.If the answer is correct, the team gets the wager added to their score. If it is incorrect, the wager is subtracted from their score. 8.After a wager is made, the team should turn the card over to the other side. (Your wager should be kept secret from other groups.) Final Jeopardy Rules

Final Jeopardy (for this example, we will assume each player has 200 points to wager) Topic: Preparing for the SAT
