2 PROBLEM SOLVING WORDS add addition sum total plus in all
in addition to increased by enlarged by gain rose greater than combine all together subtract subtraction less than minus take away decreased by diminished by reduced by How many more than? How many fewer than? How many left? fewer than difference dropped loss of divide into quotient per parts distributed among How much for each? How many groups? multiply multiplied by times of by product at groups of all together each every fractions each every Copyright ©, Long Beach Unified School District. All rights reserved. - Grade 4

3 Problem Solving Strategy “U-P-S”
Understand: Read the problem and think about the question. Each word is important. Missing a word or reading it incorrectly could cause you to get the wrong answer. Plan: Think about how you can solve the problem. Look for key words and numbers. What do you need to do first? What do you need to do next? Solve: Follow your plan, working logically and carefully. Make sure you solved all steps needed to answer the problem. Be sure you answered the question asked. Copyright ©, Long Beach Unified School District. All rights reserved. - Grade 4

5 Let’s Round Numbers! Long Beach Unified School District has , 572 students enrolled. Round this to the nearest __________.  Underline the word that comes after “nearest”.  Underline the digit in the indicated place.  Circle the digit to the right of the underlined place.  If the circled digit is 5 or greater, add one to the underlined place and change all digits to the right to zeros. 5 or  If the circled digit is 4 or less, keep the underlined place and change all digits to the right to zeros. 6 Let’s Round Numbers! Example: What is 45,638 rounded to the nearest thousand? 4 or less, stays the same 5 or higher, add one more 45,500 45,000 46,000 45,638 On the number line, 45,638 is between 45,000 and 46,000 but is closer to 46,000. 45, 6 38 46,000 Copyright ©, Long Beach Unified School District. 8 Why the Zero Place Holder?
PROBLEM: 23 X 45  MULTIPLY by the ones digit “5”  MULTIPLY by the tens digit “4”  The 4 represents 40. When you multiply by a multiple of 10 you have a zero in the ones place. Copyright ©, Long Beach Unified School District. All rights reserved. - Grade 4 Ch. 9 L 2

9 Let’s Solve Division Problems with Remainders
When you solve a division problem, sometimes you need to decide how to interpret the remainder. Sometimes you use the REMAINDER to decide on the answer. Example: The craft club members made 19 puppets. They want to package the puppets 5 to a box. How many boxes will they need? 3 R4 There will be 3 full boxes. Another box is needed for the 4 extra puppets. So 4 boxes are needed in all. -15 4 Copyright ©, Long Beach Unified School District. All rights reserved. - Grade 4 Ch 10 L 1-3

10 $ 2 4 5 - 8 1 8 - 1 6 2 - 2 0 Let’s Divide Money! PROBLEM: $9.80  4 =
 REWRITE 4 into $9.80 - 8 1 8 - 1 6  WRITE the dollar sign and decimal in the quotient 2 - 2 0  DIVIDE Copyright ©, Long Beach Unified School District. All rights reserved. - Grade 4 Ch. 11 L 2

12 Naming Angles Obtuse Angle greater than 90° Acute Angle less than 90°
Right Angle measures 90° Hint: Have students use the corner of their scratch paper. If the corner matches or lines up with the angle it is “right”! If the corner leaves part of the angle showing, it is “obtuse” open. If the angle doesn’t show when the corner is set on the vertex, the angle is “acute”. It is tiny or “cute”. 13 Classifying Triangles
All triangles have 2 names. They are classified by their angles, then their sides. Tick marks are used to show that the sides of the triangle are equal in length. Angles Sides Scalene NO equal sides Obtuse Acute 2 equal sides Isosceles Right Equilateral 3 equal sides

14 Classifying Triangles
All triangles have 2 names. They are classified by their angles, then their sides. Angles Sides Scalene Obtuse NO equal sides Angles Sides Scalene Acute Isosceles Obtuse Equilateral Right Acute 2 equal sides Isosceles Right 3 equal sides Chapter 20 Lesson 2 Equilateral

15 Polygons Identify attributes
Hint: Count the sides. Don’t expect a common shape! Triangle 3 sides Quadrilateral 4 sides Pentagon 5 sides Hexagon 6 sides Octagon 8 sides 1 2 3 2 This triangle as zero equal sides. 1 3 4 3 2 1 4 5 2 This figure has 2 pairs of equal sides and 2 pairs of parallel sides 1 3 6 4 3 5 4 2 1 5 Chapter 20 Lesson 4 Copyright ©, Long Beach Unified School District. 16 Classifying Quadrilaterals
>> Both opposite sides are parallel Both opposite angles are congruent > > Parallelogram with 4 right angles >> Parallelogram Rectangle Remember some quadrilaterals can have more than one name because they share properties. For examples squares are both a rhombus and a rectangle. >> Trapezoid Parallelogram with 4 congruent sides and 4 right angles Parallelogram with 4 congruent sides > > > Exactly one pair of opposite sides is parallel >> Rhombus Square > Trapezoid Chapter 20 Lesson 6
