2. Religion Exam Review Sheet Vocabulary- Chapters 1 and 2 Israelites = God’s chosen people New Testament = Christian Scriptures are found here. Historical = books that tell how God cared for his people in the events in history. Revelation = all that God has taught about himself and his love for his people. Tradition = beliefs passed down by word of mouth and made part of the Church’s teachings. Old Testament = Hebrew scriptures are found here. Wisdom = books that tell how to live wisely. Pentateuch = 1 st 5 books of the Bible, Torah Prophetic = books that call the people to be faithful to God and be just. Divine Inspiration = God guiding the thoughts of biblical authors and editors.

Chapters 3 and 4 Genesis = 1 st book of the Bible that contains stories of creation and the beginning of sin in the world the ability to choose Rainbow = a sign of God’s promise to Noah the ability to think, judge, live and love Grace = God’s life in us Stewards = God calls us to be this because we are to respect and protect all life. Reconciliation = the healing of the separation between self and God or self and others. Original Sin = the 1 st sin of Adam and Eve Ark = a place of security or refuge; often a boat. Ziggurat = a tower, similar to a pyramid built by the pagans to honor their gods. Conscience = inner voice that helps us judge our actions Sin = is the source of evil

4. Chapters 6 and 7 Jacob’s Ladder = the stairway in Jacob’s dream Covenant = a scared promise between God and his people. Faith = a gift from God that helps people believe in Him. Birthright = the right to inheritance and authority over brothers and sisters. Patriarch = father and ruler of a chosen people. Canaan = land between Syria and Egypt that God promised to the descendants of Abraham. Sacrifice = a ritual offering of animals or produce made to God. A sign of adoration towards God. Communal prayer = praying with a group or community Personal prayer= praying by one’s self.

5. Chapter 8 Divine Providence = God can bring good results from the bad choices people make. Jealousy = the feeling of anger, resentment or hate for someone’s qualities or belongings. Chapter 10 and 11 Idolatry = the worshipping of false gods Ark of the Covenant = chest that contained the 10 commandments Plagues = a series of disasters in Egypt to warn Pharaoh to release the Israelites. Exodus = the Israelites departure from Egypt Tent of Meeting = a sanctuary built to house the Ark of the Covenant Sedar Meal = Jewish ceremonial dinner to remember the Israelites hardships Liturgy of the Word = part of the mass that includes the readings Liturgy of the Eucharist = part of the mass where the consecration occurs. Consecration = part of the Eucharistic prayer when the Lord’s words are recited by the priest turning bread and wine into Christ’s body and blood. Lectionary = official book containing readings for the liturgy for all Sundays and weekdays. Solemnities = Eucharistic celebrations of the mysteries of the Lord or in honor or Mary and the saints.
