Who am I? ◦ Haylee Powell ◦ Year 6 teacher at Trinity Primary School ◦ Year group leader ◦ Literacy co ordinator ◦ Senior teacher responsible for the performance management of two teachers ◦ Been through three OFSTED inspections! I am in my fourth year of teaching…

What happened? ◦ Completed PGCE in 2011 ◦ In May 2011 didn't have a job. Got offered one term of work at Trinity starting September 2011. ◦ Threw myself into it, keen to do my best I always asked for help and did everything to the best of my ability. ◦ Started up my own club. ◦ Contract was extended until Easter and then again for the whole year. ◦ During this time I was given an NQT mentor, I had a lesson observation every half term and good wasn't good enough.

Continued… ◦ Made decisions to support my class of children… the children are always the most important part. ◦ A job came up in year 6 which I went for and got. ◦ Completed my NQT year and was offered the role of PE co-ordinator. ◦ A role in which I didn’t really have an interest in but wanted to prove I was ready for the next challenge! ◦ After one year in year 6 I was made year group leader and then given gifted and talented coordinator. ◦ After my second year in year 6 I was put on to the senior leadership team. ◦ At the start of my third year in year 6, the job for literacy coordinator came up. ◦ Lesson for OFSTED via IRIS ◦ Here I am going in to my fifth year of teaching!

What happens next… ◦ Many of you will now be thinking about what extra responsibilities you would like to take on next year. ◦ There are many different roles that you can take on in the second year of teaching.

Subject leaders list…

Leading a foundation subject… ◦ Strategic direction and development of XXXX ◦ Teaching and Learning ◦ Leading and managing staff ◦ Managing Resources ◦ Senior Leadership Team

Leading a core subject… ◦ Few key differences. ◦ Some core subjects involve working alongside governors. Literacy, Numeracy, Science, PE, SENCO, safeguarding, health and safety, gifted and talented, pupil premium and behaviour. ◦ Literacy, Numeracy, Science and IT are usually given TLR (although this will depend on the school). ◦ Manage pupil development ◦ Has an impact on teaching and learning ◦ Develops the teaching practise of other staff.

What is available to you… ◦ Start by taking the initiative to ask your schools what options are available. ◦ Look for non curricular leads ◦ Express interests ◦ If there aren’t any vacancies then is there something that your school is missing… eco club, forest school, developing drama, helping with a lead subject. ◦ Remember that it doesn’t have to be a subject that you are good at or is a particular strength. It is the leadership and management of it that counts! ◦ Once you have proven that you can take on something small then other opportunities will soon pop up!

Where to start! ◦ Once you have taken on an area, develop an action plan! ◦ Create an action plan ◦ Use your job description template. ◦ If you are taking over a subject look at what is already in place. ◦ How can you put your spin on the subject? ◦ Discuss your vision and the schools vision with the head teacher and the teaching staff. ◦ Talk to the children- what do they think about the topic area? what is already happening in lessons? what would they like to happen next? ◦ Create an action plan

My advice! ◦ Focus on the learning of the children in your own classroom ◦ Manage your time effectively ◦ Set an example by leading your TA effectively ◦ Take time to talk to staff, especially if you are looking to lead a curriculum area. ◦ Use your initiative- clubs, ideas… ◦ Want to do well for the children as well as for yourself ◦ Take opportunities! ◦ Love what you do!
