5 Coalition Mandate To have an entire generation grow up knowing the three basic rules of Internet safety: Keep. Don’t Meet. Tell. SM KEEP your personal information protected. Never give your real name, address, phone number, the name of your school or a picture of yourself to anyone online. DON’T MEET in person with anyone you’ve met on the Net. TELL a parent, teacher or trusted adult if you feel uncomfortable about anything you see on the computer.

6 Statistics 96% of all youth access the internet with 74% accessing from home. 66% of all youth use Instant Messaging. 6 in 10 Children online receive email or Instant Message from strangers. More than half write back. 29% of children freely give personal information online when asked. 1 in 5 youth receives an online sexual solicitation in a 1 year period; in 15% of those cases, the solicitor attempted to meet the child in person. 1 in 4 children inadvertently views online pornography each year.

7 39% of children 4-6 years use a computer several times a week. 56% of children 4-6 years have used a computer by themselves (without a parent). 65% of youth (10-17 years) report their first computer between the ages of 6 and 10. 38% of kids reported their first Internet use between ages of 8-9 years — Kaiser Family Foundation Studies 2005 and 2003 Very Young Children

9 A Daughter in Danger? Imagine if you found out your teenage daughter was falling in love with an older man on the Internet, concocting a plan to be together, 5,591 miles away in a war-torn country. This is an alert to all parents: Do you know what your child is doing on the computer? A Nightmare Revisited When Shawn’s daughter, Katherine, was 16, she made international headlines by running away to the Middle East to be with Abdullah, 20, whom she met online. Though she never met him in person, she was convinced she was in love.

Part 2 Dr. Phil continues the story of a mother who says she lives in fear every day that her 18 year old daughter, Katherine, could be killed by a man she met on the Internet. Katherine A Family in Anguish Two weeks ago, Katherine flew to the Middle East to be with Abdullah, a man she met online and wants to marry. Her family is terrified that she's in danger and won't be allowed to return home.
