1 Article 10 BALANCE BEAM

2 10.1 General u The evaluation of the exercise begins with the take- off from the board or the mat. u A second run approach for the mount is permitted, if the gymnast on her first attempt (balk) has not touched the springboard, or the apparatus. u After a 2 nd unsuccessful attempt to mount she should begin the exercise. u "Mount" not from the Table of elements – deductions will apply, but no additional penalty if she has not touched the springboard or the apparatus.

3 The duration of the exercise on the balance beam may not exceed 1:30 minutes (90 seconds). u The Time Judge 1 (Assistant) begins timing when the gymnast takes-off from the springboard or mat. She stops the clock, when the gymnast touches the mat upon completion of her beam exercise. u A signal (gong) will be communicated ten (10) seconds prior to the maximum time limit and again at the maximum time limit (1:30) to indicate that the exercise is to be finished. u If the dismount lands at the sound of the second signal, there is no deduction. u If the dismount lands after the sound of the second signal, there is a deduction for exceeding the time limit. The judges evaluate the entire exercise including the dismount.

4 TIMING – Cont’d u The deduction for overtime will be taken, if the exercise is more than 1:30 minutes (90 sec.). - 0.10 P. u Elements performed after the 90 second time limit will be recognized by the D- Panel and evaluated by the E- Panel. u Time violations are reported in writing by the respective Time Judge to the D- Panel judges, who then take the deduction from the Final Score.

5 Intermediate (fall) time: u For interruption of the exercise due to a fall from the apparatus, an intermediate time period of ten (10) seconds is allowed (Time Judge 2 begins timing when the gymnast is on her feet after the fall). u The duration of the fall is timed separately; it will not be calculated in the total time of the exercise.

6 Intermediate (fall) time: u The D2 judge will ensure that the Beam timer communicates the elapsing time by counting out loud the 10 second limit (i.e. 1,2,3,...10). u At the count of 10, a final verbal warning signal of “Time” will be announced clearly and loudly by the timer. The D1 will also announce that the exercise is ended. u The fall period ends when the gymnast takes-off from the mat to remount the beam. u After remounting the beam the resumption of timing by Time Judge 1 begins with the first movement to continue the exercise.

7 u The maximum 8 highest difficulties including the dismount are awarded u Maximum 5 Acro u Minimum 3 Dance 10.2 Content and Construction of the Exercise D- Score

8 COMPOSITION REQUIREMENTS CR’S

On the Beam u One connection of at least 2 different dance elements, 1 being a leap, jump or hop with 180° split (cross position only) – award 0.50 CR - 1

CR- 2 — Turns  on one foot u Not necessarily 360 but needs to be minimum A

CR – 3 u One acro series, min. of 2 flight* elements 1 being a Salto– award 0.50 (elements may be the same) * Flight elements with or without hand support. The elements must be performed on the beam

CR – 4 The elements must be performed on the beam u — Acro elements in different directions (Acro FWD/SWD and BWD)

CR- 5 — Dismount uNuNo dismount, A- or B- dismount+0.00 P. uCuC- dismount+0.30 P. uDuD- or higher dismount+0.50 P

14 Note: u CR 1 - 4 must be performed on the Beam. u Rolls, handstands and holds may not be used to fulfill CR.

15 Connection Value Connection Value u Connection Value can be awarded for direct connections. u The CV will be added into the D- Score.

16 2 acro flight elements, excluding the dismount 0.100.20 *C/D + D (or more) C+C B + E C/D + D e.g. Flic Flac 1/1 turn (5.405) to back tuck salto (5.313); aerial cartwheel (5.409) to back layout step out (5.313) B+F * Connections of flight elements: - forward + forward/sideward - forward + backward (or reversed) -salto + flight element with hand support (performed in this order)

17 3 acrobatic flight elements, including the mount and dismount (DMT minimum D) 0.100.20 B + B + D C + B + C (must be performed in this order) B + B + E C + C + C B + C + D

18 DANCE – TURNS ** u A+C or reversed = 0.10 u ** May be performed on the same support leg, or with step to 2nd turn. (No preparation permitted for 2nd turn) u No additional step is permitted to get back onto the same leg to turn

19 MIXED u C + C or more (excluding dismount) D- salto + A- scale (this order and no step is permitted into scale)

20 10.4 u Jumps with 1/1 turn or more performed in a side position will be awarded one DV higher than in a cross position. (if not otherwise listed in Table of Elements)

CV Stipulations u Acro elements can be performed 2 times within the same series for CV but will receive DV only once. (when seen the first time in a connection) u The following B- acro elements can be used a 2 nd time in the exercise/dismount for CV only : u Flic-flac with legs together; flic flac with step out, u Gainer flic-flac u Round off u Handspring forward

22 Dismount with fall: u If the salto for the dismount has not begun (no initiation of rotation) and a fall occurs, or u No attempt for DMT at all (landing on feet or falling after landing on feet) u Example 1: Round off, jump off BB: Evaluation: u No CR (D- panel) u NO DV – count 7 elements only (D- panel) u 0.50 No attempt to dismount (E- panel) u Apply landing deductions (E- panel)

23 If the salto for the dismount has begun and then a fall occurs: u Example 2: Round off, begin salto dismount, failure to land feet first Evaluation: u No CR (D- panel) u No DV –count 7 elements only (D- panel) u Apply Landing deductions (E- panel)

Artistry Deductions (E Panel) 0.100.300.50 Insufficient variation in rhythmx Sureness of PerformancexX Insufficient Artistry of presentation throughout the exercise including: Lack of creative choreography Originality of composition of elements and movement XX Inappropriate gesture (mimic) not corresponding to the movements x

Specific Execution Deductions 0.100.300.50 Or more Third run approach, or touch the springboard without mounting 1.0 Additional support of leg against side surface of beam x Failure to meet tech. req. through use of additional support x Grasp to avoid fallx Additional movements to maintain balancexxx Concentration pause (+2 sec.)X Extended preparation for Dance elementsx Poor rhythm in connectionsx

26 Specific Execution Deductions FAULTS0.100.300.50 One sided use of elements: More than one 1/2 turn on 2 feet with straight legs throughout exercise More than one leap/jump/hop element to prone or front support position XXXX Insufficient use of entire beam apparatus: missing one movement close to the beam with a part of the torso, and/or head touching the beam (element not necessary) X Mount not from table of elementsX No attempt to dismount 0.50

27 Falls u Falls - Acro and Dance Elements - must return to beam with foot or torso to be awarded difficulty u with a landing of one or two feet or in prescribed position on the beam -the DV is awarded u without a landing of one or two feet or in prescribed position on the beam - No DV is awarded

u Only a round-off may precede the mount u Mount elements (rolls, handstands and holds) may be performed within the routine but receive DV only once for the same element Mounts

Holds u Handstands (without turns) & Holds must be held for 2 sec., when prescribed in the table of elements in order to receive DV. If the element is not held for 2 sec. and does not appear as another element in Code award 1 DV lower (HSTD or hold position should be completed).

30 Holds u 5.304 and 5.404 will be credited 1 DV lower if the handstand is not held for 2sec u (Flic flac with ½ twist; flic flac with ¾ twist) u If gymnast performs the same element again in the exercise and holds the HSTD position for 2 sec. - No DV awarded u For CV “holds” acro elements may be used as the 2 nd element in an Acro flight series.

Forward Elements Arabian and Onodi u Onodi and Arabian are Forward elements u Onodi can be used as 1 st or 2 nd element in acro series since it is continuous and moving in same direction u Onodi Tic Toc can only be used as the last element in a series u Onodi and Onodi Tic Toc are considered same element for DV

32 Onodi (5.407) u if gymnast arrives in handstand, holds 2 seconds but there is no walkover- devalue to a C u if gymnast arrives in handstand, NO hold, NO walkover devalue to a B u if gymnast does not arrive in handstand= NO DV (0)

33 SPECIFIC ELEMENTS u5u5.405 - flic flac with 1/1 twist before hand support; 5.407 - gainer flic flac with 1/1 twist before hand support; 5.408 - flic flac with 1/1 twist to cross straddle sit u hands must land in cross position. If hands land in side position then the element is awarded one DV lower uIuIf gymnast performs the same element again in the exercise and completes 1/1 twist - No DV awarded

34 SPECIFIC ELEMENTS u Hands placed together in Cross position – Correct u Hands one in front of the other in Cross position - Correct u If front hand completed turn - DV awarded (apply deduction for precision) u Hands in Side Position - award C- DV
