Big Ideas How did the growth of trade change feudal society in Europe?
How did the technologies of war affect society in Europe? What were the causes of social upheaval? How were the attitudes towards the catholic church changing?

Why did trade increase? After the end of the crusades the feudal system was weakened and manors became less self sufficient Europeans needed ways to meet their daily needs so they began to explore and trade Mediterranean was the hub for trade in Europe One of the most famous early merchants was Marco Polo

Goods Important goods from Asia were Good from Europe included Jewels
Silk Rugs Fabrics Spices Good from Europe included Timber Minerals Grains, livestock Wine, olive oil

Why did towns start to grow?
At first merchants would sell their goods at fairs that would last for about 2 weeks As Europeans had more exposure to this way of trade they began to realize that they too could create items for trades and leave the life a serf behind This lead to permanent markets in towns and people moving closer to them to be a part of the growing community

Craft guilds As crafts people began moving to towns and cities they needed a way to regulate their products Guilds were created by each specialty to control prices, quality, and eliminate competition Some of these guilds included Bakers Tailors Weapon and armour makers tanners

Protected and supported its’ members Regulated how much they would pay the Lord’s Process of joining Apprentice - parents pay for kids to join as young as 8 years old. Assist a master for 8-9 years Journeyman - starting to gain own wages working on “masterpiece” Master – After masterpiece has been accepted by heads of guild they can open their own shop

Other guild benefits Power shifted from land owners to money wealth
Women could work in guilds and have their own money Guilds set up governments in their towns and created charters Guilds realized they needed people who could read and write so they opened the first non church schools Everyone had the chance to raise their social status
