IA-32 Address Limits: −2 32 is 4GBytes (theoretical max); most CAE applications address max of ~1.5 - 2GB; some ISVs have tweaked codes to get up to ~3GBytes −64-bit chips have huge theoretical max; limit becomes ISV application (e.g. MSC.NASTRAN v2001 limit is 8 GB) Structural Analysis (Implicit FEA) −model size characterized by Degrees of Freedom (DOF) −1 million DOF typically fits in <1GB, depending on element type −3 mil DOF might require ~2GB Impact Analysis (Explict FEA) −model size characterized by # elements −1mil shell element “Neon” model requires 2GB for single precision runs and 4GB for double precision (for improved accuracy) Fluid Analysis (Computational Fluid Dynamics) −model size characterized by # cells; 1 mil cells requires ~1GB

37 May, 2004Public Slide Set37 HP Logo Mixing Demo by CFX The simulation is that of a mixing device (3-D HP logo), which involves a transient two phase flow simulation in two frames of reference. The two phases are air and water. A water wave is generated upstream of the "mixer". The mixer rotates at a constant rpm. Two different frames of reference (a stationary frame, and a rotating frame in the region around the mixer) are used, with a "sliding interface" connecting the two regions.
