1 WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF RADIO?

2 RADIO STATIONS Radio 1 was established in 1967 and specializes in modern and current and popular music. After 7pm, alternative genres including electronic dance, hip hop, rock, indie and interviews are played. The primary age range is between 15-29. Radio 2 is Britain’s most popular radio station and described as ‘Adult Contempory’ or AOR, although the station is also noted for its specialist broadcasting and other musical genres. The stations audience is mainly adults over 35. Radio 3 centers on classical music and opera but jazz, world music, drama, culture and the arts feature as well. The station is the worlds most significant commissioner of new music. The demographic for Radio 3 is older adults.

3 Lanched in March, the station specializes in live BBC news, phone-ins, interviews and sport commentaries. It is the principle radio station covering sport in the UK. Audience is predominately male and middle aged. Capital FM is an independent radio station owned by Global Radio and features mainly contemporary music and news. The station has an audience of 7.1 million who are mainly between the age of 14-34. Dee 106.3 broadcasts to Chester and the surrounding areas of Ellesmere Port, Connah’s Quay, Queensferry and Neston. Covering 43% of all people in Chester, the station features presenters, celebrities and local issues. 82,000 adult listeners are aged over 15.

4 LOCAL RADIO STATIONS Focus more on local issues affecting its audience. This could include topics such as events happening or traffic reports targeting roads in the station’s reach. You could argue too that local radio is more communal; featuring local business adverts. NATIONAL RADIO STATIONS Stations including BBC Radio 1 and 2 has a much larger scale; as it is not commercial, it features no external advertisements.
