The Statue of Liberty is a 152 feet high female figure,facing the ocean from Liberty Island in New York Harbour.It is more than a monument.She is a beloved friend,the symbol of freedom to millions around the world.

In 1898,Greater New York included 5 boroughs: Manhattan,Brooklyn,the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island (Richmond).

The Bronx is situated south of Manhattan. One can visit the world-famous zoo and botanical garden there.

Richmond occupies the Staten Island.

Brooklyn is the largest and most populated borough to the south of Manhattan on Long Island.

The centre of New York is located on the granite island of Manhattan which lies between the Hudson River and the East River.It is the smallest island of New York. The population of Manhattan is about two million people.Here is the heart of America’s business and culture.

New York is the city of sky-scrapers.The tallest of them used to be the twin-towers of the World Trading Center.

The Empire State Building is the tallest of New York’s sky-scrapers now.It is situated in the centre of the city and has 102 storeys.There are 73 elevators,1860 steps,and 6,500 windows.

The Rockefeller Centre is a group of 15 skyscrapers,including the 70-storey Radio Corporation of America Building,which houses Radio City Music Hall.

The United Nations Building is also located in New York.The United Nations Headquarters is in this building.

Central Park of New York includes a Zoo, a theatre,two skating-rinks,model yacht pond,rowing lakes.

Wall Street is the financial center of the USA.Situated here are the Trinity Church, the Federal Hall National Memorial,the New York Stock Exchange and the biggest banks of the country.

Everybody heard of Broadway.It is the centre of the theatres and night life.It is a city that never goes to sleep.Buses and the subway run all night.There are many restaurants which never close.There are cinemas with films that start at midnight. Broadway is known as “The Great White Way”because of the electric signs which turn night into day.

Times Square is the theatrical centre of the city and the place for public celebrations.

In New York there are streets and avenues.One of the avenues is Park Avenue which runs past Central Park.Multi millionaires of the city live there,so it is the symbol of richness and luxury.

Another fashionable avenue is Fifth Avenue with its expensive shops and luxurious houses.

New York is rich in museums.Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the world’s leading art museums.Its collection spans the history of world art from the ancient civilizations to the present day.

Everyday American life is very busy,noisy and not so easy.

But nevertheless,New York is the city that is worth seeing.
