1 Monroe County, PA Population Growth The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that Monroe County’s population grew 19.5% between the time of the 2000 census and July 1, 2006, or from 138,687 to 165,685 people. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2008) See Map of Monroe County, Slide 2. In a ten-year period from 1990 to 2000, Monroe County experienced— a 45% gain in population. In 1990, the non-European white population numbered 3%, but by the 2000 U.S. Census it grew to 16% of the total population. See 2000 Changing Community Chart, Slide 3. Over one-quarter of county residents are now estimated to be non-European whites, with the remaining 74.4% non-Hispanic whites. See 2006 Changing Community Chart, Slide 4. Between 2000 and 2005, Monroe’s minority population grew by 87.5% -- a faster rate of growth than in any other large county in the state. (Center for Rural Pennsylvania, 2007) An estimated 21,661 (13.8%,)of residents, speak a language other than English at home. A little over half of these (55%) speak Spanish. Other languages include Polish, Russian and a myriad of others. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2008)
