**Metric Units of Measurement**

7-2 6th grade math Metric Units of Measurement

2
**Objective To convert one unit of metric measurement to another**

Why? To know how to convert measures to help you in the sciences. Most countries of the world use the standard system of measurement called the Système International (SI) commonly called the metric system.

3
**California State Standards**

AF 2.1: Convert from one unit of measurement to another. MR 3.1: Evaluate the reasonableness of the solution in the context of the original situation.

4
**Vocabulary Metric System Meter Gram Liter**

a measurement system that measures length in millimeters, centimeters, meters, and kilometers; capacity in liters and milliliters; mass in grams and kilograms; and temperature in degrees Celsius Meter The basic unit of length in the metric system m Gram The basic unit of weight in the metric system g Liter The basic unit of capacity in the metric system L

5
**Vocabulary Kilo Hecto Deka Deci Centi Milli 1000 100 10 Tenth (.1)**

Hundredth (.01) Milli Thousandth (.001)

6
**Metric Chart of Conversion**

Chart of Metric →x 10 →x 10 →x 10 → x 10 → x 10 → x 10 ←÷ 10 ← ÷ 10 ←÷ 10 ← ÷ 10 ←÷ 10 ← ÷ 10 1 metric ton (t) = 1000 kg Metric Chart of Conversion kilometer hectometer dekameter Meter decimeter centimeter millimeter km hm dam m dm cm mm 1 km = 1000 m 1 hm = 100 m 1 dam = 10 m 1 dm = 0.1 m 1 cm = 0.01 1 mm = 0.001

7
Conversions When going from a smaller unit of measure to a larger unit, divide. When going from a larger unit of measure to a smaller unit, multiply.

8
**How to Convert in Metric**

1600 m = ___ km m < km; divide by 1000 or move the decimal 3 spaces to the left 1600 m = _1.6_ km 2) m = ___ cm m > cm; multiply by 100 or move the decimal 2 spaces to the right 2.05 m = _205_ cm 3) 4000 g = ___ kg g < kg; divide by 1000 or move decimal 3 spaces to the left 4000 g = _4_ kg 4) 30 kL = ___ L kL > L; multiply by 1000 or move decimal to the right 30 kL = _30,000_ L 1) Count the spaces between the 2 conversions. Pay attention to the direction of going from the first to the second. It might be helpful to write out the chart: km, hm, dam, m, dm, cm, mm 2) Move the decimal in the original number the number of spaces and in the direction of Step 1. Keep the order of the digits the same. Left movement = smaller. Right movement = larger. 3) Check for reasonableness.

9
**Try It! Kilogram Centimeter Liter Kilometer Meter Gram**

Write in unit of metric measurement Mass of bowling ball Length of golf tee Capacity of sink Distance to the next town Length of a room Mass of a pinch of salt

10
Try Some More! 7) ___ kL = 4250 L 8) ___ dm = ___ 1 m 9) 2500 mm = ___ m 10) 6.5 L = ___ mL 11) 3 km = ___ m 12) ___ g = kg 7) _4.25_ kL = 4250 L 8) _10_ dm = ___ 1 m 9) 2500 mm = _2.5_ m 10) 6.5 L = _6500_ mL 11) 3 km = _3000_ m 12) _1_ g = kg

11
**Objective Review To convert one unit of metric measurement to another**

Why? You now know how to convert measures to help you in the sciences. To change a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply To change a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide The shortcut for multiplying or dividing is just moving the decimal to the right or left

12
**Independent Practice Complete problems 14-36**

Copy original problem first. Show all work! If time, complete Mixed Review: 37-45 If still more time, work on Accelerated Math.
