2 Today’s Lesson: Standard: RI 9-10.8 – Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is valid and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; identify false statements and fallacious reasoning. Content Objective: ◦ We will DELINEATE and EVALUATE the CLAIMS in a product Fact Sheet. ◦ We will determine if CLAIMS on a product Fact Sheet have sufficient EVIDENCE. Language Objective: ◦ I will delineate the difference between a claim and a fact using a sentence frame on the Ticket out the Door.

3 Academic Vocabulary (see chart) DELINEATE: delinear ◦ To describe precisely; to clearly show ◦ A manufacturer must delineate the product instructions on the package to ensure it is used properly. CLAIM: una reclamación ◦ An opinion; a statement saying that something is true when some people may say it is not true; a statement open to challenge. ◦ Many people make the claim that they have been abducted by aliens, but fail to provide enough evidence to support their claim. EVIDENCE: evidencia ◦ Facts or information indicating whether a belief or claim is true or valid. ◦ We were told to support our opinions with plenty of strong and reliable evidence. EVALUATE : evaluar ◦ To judge or assess the quality or value of something. ◦ We must carefully evaluate the statements in product advertisements for outrageous claims.
