L.I: To be able to explain the difference between FPP and MMP voting systems STARTER: When we voted last lesson, how did we decide which group was the winner?

 The system of voting we used is called “First Past the Post”, or FPP for short.  Finish this sentence: “Using an FPP voting system, the winner is…..”  When you are voting for Mrs Berry-Eden’s class on Monday, you will use a different system of voting called “Mixed Member Proportional” representation, or MMP.

How is this different to the voting slip you used last lesson?

 120 seats all together  63 electorate seats  7 Maori seats  50 party list seats – what does this mean? If a party gets over 5% of the total party vote, they get the number of seats in parliament equivalent to the % of vote they received E.g If a party gets 50% of all the party votes, they end up with 50% of the seats in parliament

 The whole of NZ is divided into 63 general electorates and 7 Maori electorates  We are in the Pakuranga electorate, although if you live a long way from school your family might be in a different electorate.

What is good about the MMP system of voting? Can you think of anything bad about it? Which system do you think is better? MMP or FPP (the one that we used)

Ask your parents or research:  How many seats are there in the NZ parliament?  What decides the number of seats each party gets in the parliament?
