10 Specific Objectives 1 - To contribute to the MDG’s on safe water and sanitation, through the Integrated Water and Sanitation Management. - To reduce the mortality from water and sanitation born or related diseases.

11 - To ensure participatory approach and to build capacities of the community based organisations (CBOs) - To promote private sector involvement, in particular micro and small local social enterprises Specific Objectives 2

12 - To facilitate access and the use of water and sanitation facilities in the schools, in conjunction with the participatory approach of the Child-to-Child Programme, instead of Chalk-and-Talk - To improve practices and behaviours within school children inside and outside the school environment Specific Objectives 3

13 - To promote changes in behaviour and social practices (early abandon of school by young girls having to supply drinking water and evacuate of waste water) and to promote prevention of HIV/AIDS propagation (genital mutilation, early marriages, etc.) - To promote knowledge and information sharing regarding water and sanitation Specific Objectives 4

14 Strategy The strategy consists on the promotion of sustainable technologies for integrated water resource management and sanitation, rain water harvesting, accompanied by the promotion of health, hygiene and sanitation education. 15 Why Saraya? Saraya is in a very remote and underdeveloped and underserved region of Senegal, suffering from a severe lack of water and sanitation infrastructures. A sudden and rapid increase in population, due to two recently opened gold mines, has exacerbated these insufficiencies and the health risks. The population has initiated positive actions to improve their conditions, but they are lacking the necessary resources and coordination. 16 Sustainability The proposed project is based on an effective demand of the population who is willing to participate actively in the implementation of the project.
