Electricity Generation

What is energy? Types of energy Energy = the ability to do work Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it just transforms from one form to another 1.Heat or thermal 2.Sound 3.Light 4.Chemical 5. Mechanical/kinetic 6. Electrical 7. Nuclear

Station activity: Energy transformation Visit 5 stations Look at the visual hint or object at each station Note the type of energy transformation that has taken place Fill out the accompanied table as you rotate through the station (see next slide)

Station #Energy transformation that I think happening Correct answer (to be taken up as a class) 1.Windmill mechanical into electrical energy 2. Battery- powered fan chemical into mechanical energy 3. Photosynthesis Light energy into chemical energy 4. Hand crank generator (Dynamo) mechanical into electrical energy 5. Motor electrical into mechanical energy Energy transformation station activity

How is electricity generated? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8QF8uRCEtE&feature=youtu.be A GENERATOR is used to make electricity Inside a generator, a magnet called a ROTOR spins inside coils of copper wire called a STATOR. Copper is a conductor which allows electrons to move freely from one copper atom to the next, creating a flow of electrons or electricity. Fan-like wheels called TURBINES are used to spin the magnets (i.e. rotor) inside the generator. Rotor: rotates; Stator: stays put

HOW IS ELECTRICITY GENERATED? Wind, steam, water are commonly used to supply motion needed to produce electricity All power plants do the same job. They transform kinetic energy (i.e. motion) into electrical energy (i.e. a flow of electrons) Different energy sources but same operating principle

Difference between motors and generators MotorsGenerators What types of energy are converted by a motor? By a generator? _______________  _____________energy __________________  ________________energy Electrical Mechanical

Renewable and Non-renewable energy used in electricity generation Renewable energyNon-renewable energy Sources of energy that can be replaced infinitely Sources of energy that cannot be replaced once used up Examples of renewable energy Wind, solar, hydro, biomas Examples of non- renewable energy Fossil fuels (natural gas, coal), nuclear
