Operation Christmas Child  Practical gifts are so important. These children are thrilled to receive items like toothbrushes, combs, and brushes. Some may have never had their own before.  Simple items of clothing like t-shirts, socks, or a hat are wonderful because some of the children may only own one shirt.  School supplies like pencils, small tablets of paper, crayons, etc. are great as sometimes children aren't allowed to attend school unless they can provide their own supplies.  Toys are great (and the children love them, too), but they shouldn't be the biggest emphasis of the box.  Only hard candy is allowed in the boxes. No chocolate or other food can be shipped overseas. A little candy is fine, but practical gifts are best.

Big Words, Important Words Hermeneutics: The science and art of biblical interpretation. General Hermeneutics: Study of rules that are true for interpreting all of Scripture Special Hermeneutics: Study of rules that apply when interpreting specific types of Scripture (Parables, prophecies, etc.) Exegesis: Using hermeneutics to reach a correct understanding of Scripture.

One Word, Three Meanings “The Law” The entire Old Testament The “Book of the Law” Pentateuch: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy “The Law” Exodus 20 – Deuteronomy 34 Over 600 commandments

How Should New Testament Christians Apply Old Testament Law? The Old Testament is not our testament “Unless an Old Testament law is somehow restated or reinforced in the New Testament, it is no longer directly binding on God’s people.” (Fee/Stuart, pp. 151-52) All of the Old Testament is still the Word of God for us even if not still the command of God to us

Benefits of The Law for Israel Protected them from disease “And the pig…is unclean to you” (Leviticus 11:7) Protected them from false religions “You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk” (Deuteronomy 14:21) Promised blessings for obedience Give tithe so “that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands” (Deuteronomy 14:29)

Benefits of The Law for Us Reveals the character of God Leviticus 19:9-14 Shows us we can’t please God on our own James 2:10 Points to the Savior Hebrews 9:22

Background Facts: Deuteronomy Author: Moses Title: “Second copy” (Deuteronomy 17:18) Audience: Israelites Context: After wandering in wilderness 40 years, Israel is now ready to enter Promised Land Purpose: Review and renew the covenant between God and his people

Reflection: Deuteronomy 29:10-13 “You are standing today all of you before the Lord your God…so that you may enter into the sworn covenant of the Lord your God, which the Lord your God is making with you today, that he may establish you today as his people, and that he may be your God, as he promised you, and as he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.”

Why Should We Study This Book? It will help us know and worship our “great and awesome God” (Deuteronomy 7:21) The one true God (Deuteronomy 4:32-39) The sovereign God (Deuteronomy 7:17-19) It will challenge us to follow and obey God If it’s good enough for Jesus, it’s good for us!
