Measurement of mortality: Manish Chaudhary MPH(BPKIHS)

Measurement of mortality: Mortality rates measures the frequency of deaths within the specific populations and are calculated for a given interval of time and place.

Crude Death Rate: It is defined as number of deaths per 1000 estimated mid year population in one year in a given place. CDR: Total no. of deaths reported during a given time interval X 1000/ Estimated mid –year population

Measures of morbidity Morbidity has been defined as “ any departure subjective or objective, from the state of physiological well being”. It can be measured by – incidence rate, – prevalence rate, – disability rate.

Incidence Rate: Incidence rate is defined as “ the number of new cases occurring in a defined population during a specified period of time’

Prevalence Rate: The term prevalence refers to specifically to all current cases (old and new) existing at a given point in time or over a period of time in a given population. It is two types – Point Prevalence – Period Prevalence

Relationship between incidence and prevalence If the incidence rate and duration of illness remain constant over a period and are expressed in same time unit, their product will give the approximate of point prevalence rate. P = I x D Where P= prevalence rate( point ) I= incidence rate D = Duration of illness( average)

Measures of Natality ( fertility )
