1 Fashion History B.C. to Present Times

2 B.C. Fashions of this period come from: Egyptians and Romans.
Most is known about Egyptian fashion due to their burial procedures. Linen was used exclusively as a textile with the Egyptians because it was all they were able to grow in their area.

3 Egyptian Fashions 1. The Kalasiris was a linen gown worn by Egyptian women. 2. Whether you were rich or poor you wore jewelry. 3. Both men and women made up their eyes and lips.

4 4. The Shenti was the loincloth worn by Egyptian men.
5. They bathed frequently and shaved off all of their body hair. 6. Men and woman wore a new wig each day

7 Roman Fashions 1. The toga was the national garment of Rome worn by men over a tunic. 2. The toga was made of wool. 3. The stola was a long, pleated dress, worn over a tunic.

11 ’s, 13th & 14th Century 1. The Bliaud was a dress worn by woman or men in this time period. 2. Noblemen wore a calf- or ankle-length . 3. Ladies were dressed in a ground-length bliaud.

12 ’s 4. The Hennin, was a cone-like hat resembling the spires of the cathedral spire. 5. The hennin was worn tilted backwards at an angle. 6. The hennin was 12 to 18 inches

13 1200-1300 7. The Tunic was often one of the
stylistic features of the classic businessman. 8. Usually made of wool or linen, or silk. 9. The tunic was often worn with hose.

15 ’s the 15th & 16th Century 1. Fashion in this era was greatly influenced by the European Kings and Queens. 2. The Surcoat was a popular fashion accessory for the men of this era. 3. Peasants had a lot of different clothing styles because each style identified the woman with her hometown.

16 1400’s-1500’s 4. The Farthingale was a stiff metal cone-shaped article worn under skirts. Farthingale

17 1400-1500 5. The Ruff was a large stiff collar worn at this time.
6. It was worn by men, woman and children.

19 1600’s The French Courtiers influence for this time was a fashion which said “I don’t have to work for a living.” The Puritan costumes were very simple. When religious values are ascendant, dress becomes strict.

20 1600’s Fashions In Denmark the Short Jacket and Breeches were the style of the day.

22 1700’s The 1700’s started with the drastic extension of both the hips and the hair for women. Women were becoming writers, business women, artists and doctors. The dress was a spectacle which far outweighed the proportions of a man.

23 1700’s 1. This shows the Pannier Hoop, used under a ladies dress to extend the hips drastically.

24 1770’s 2. Hair was piled high on the head in the Pompadour style and atop the mountain of hair (which usually included pieces of someone else’s hair called a Rat) sat large hats topped with feathers, bows and ribbons.

25 1700’s 3. The Justaucorps for men was the forerunner of today’s suit coat. It was worn at knee length.

26 1700’s 4 Near the end of the 1700’s women began to wear dresses that followed the simple lines of the Greek silhouette. The hair softened at this time as well. Women left behind the corset for a brief time and wore a simple Round Gown.

28 1800’s Fashion at this time went through some very distinct changes. The 19th century starts with the Greek influence, then woman gradually add to the dress until the Greek is not noticeable. The corset returns! The high society had rich fashions, while the common people dressed simply. It was an era of romance and manners

29 1800’s 1. The well-dressed man of the nineteenth century England was called a Dandy. 2. The well-dressed woman wore a large bell-shaped skirt 1820 1850 1880

30 3. Skirts were supported by a crinoline.
4. The first fashion designer who was not only a dressmaker was Charles Frederick Worth

33 1890’s Gibson Girl Artist’s sketches of young women by Charles Dana Gibson, known as the Gibson Girls, were published in newspapers and set the standard for the all-American girl.

34 1890’s The exaggerated Hourglass was the silhouette style of this decade. Shoulders were wide, waists were cinched in unmercifully by corsets and the hip was incredibly increased by the bustle.
