What is Sjögren's Syndrome? a chronic disorder in which the white blood cells attack the saliva and tear glands. it’s a disease that causes dryness in the mouth and eyes and sometimes in the nose, throat, and skin pain and stiffness in the joints and aching muscles can occur this autoimmune disease can affect other parts of the body as well, including the kidneys and the lungs
Classifications of Sjögren’s Syndrome Primary Sjögren’s Syndrome: when the condition does not develop as a result of another autoimmune disease. Secondary Sjögren’s Syndrome: when the condition develops because of or alongside another autoimmune disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.
How is Sjögren’s Syndrome an autoimmune disorder? Sjögren’s Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder because the body’s white blood cells attack their moisture-producing glands. Autoimmune diseases feature the abnormal production of extra antibodies in the blood that are directed against various tissues of the body.
How is Sjögren’s Syndrome caused? There is no known cause to having the Sjögren’s Syndrome. However, there are very few known contributing factors, such as: – Viral Infections – Heredity – Hormones Because it is inherited, there is no particular way to prevent developing the disease.
