CHS Physics Multiplying Vectors

Three Possibilities 1. Multiplying a Vector by a Scalar 2. Multiplying Vector by a Vector 1. Scalar Product 2. Vector Product

By a Scalar  Results in a New Vector  The magnitude is determined by the product of the magnitudes of the original vector and the scalar  The direction is the same as the original vector if the scalar is positive, but opposite if the scalar is negative.  What about dividing by a vector?

By a Vector  The Scalar (Dot) Product  Definition of Scalar Product

By a Vector  The Vector (Cross) Product  Definition

Vector Product Direction  Resultant Vector is mutually perpendicular to each of the original vectors.  Right-Hand Rule  Point the fingers of your right hand in the direction of the first vector.  Orient your hand so that you can rotate your fingers to the direction of the second vector.  Your extended thumb points in the direction of the resultant vector.

Expansions  Scalar (Dot) Product  Vector (cross) Product
