3 CYCLES AND PATTERNS IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM Grade 5 Earth and Space Science Earth an Space Science(ESS) ESS.35.5c – identify what can be found in the solar system ESS.35.6c – Recognize that the sun is a star ESS.35.7c – Recognize that Earth rotates on its axis ESS.35.5b – Compare or contrast the sun, planets, and moons that are found in the solar system ESS.35.7b – Recognize that Earth revolves around the sun while it rotates on its axis Students will participate by watching and listening and then filling out a short worksheet together in class.

5 WHAT IS A PLANET? Planet characteristics: Orbits the sun Roundish shape Not a moon Has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit

6 SOLAR SYSTEM Formed 4.6 billion years ago Orion Arm of the Milky way galaxy Space crafts land on many of the planets to help us understand and learn about the solar system Has 8 planets, not including the sun Many dwarf planets Comets Asteroids And much more

7 THE SUN Considered a Star No solid surface92.1% Hydrogen, 7.8% helium Center of the Solar System Orbited by 8 planets, 5 dwarf planets, many asteroids, trillions of comets and icy bodies No rings No life on Earth without the Sun 27 million degrees Fahrenheit

8 EARTH Earth means ground Third from the sun 24 hours in a day 365 days to orbit the sun Rocky planet Ocean planet - 70% is water 78% nitrogen 21% oxygen and 1 % other Only Breathable planet One moon No rings Perfect place to live Atmosphere protects us from incoming meteoroids Four season due to rotation and tilted axis Rotates on its axis Revolves around the sun while it rotates on its axis

9 DWARF PLANETS Days and years very Solid, rocky and/or icy bodies No known rings Most have moons No known life Pluto is now considered a Dwarf planet as of 2006 Not considered a moon Barely a round shape Pluto

10 MARS Mars means “the red one” 142 million miles from the sun Over 24 hours in a day Orbits the sun in 687 Earth days Has dust storms Carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and argon 2 moons – Phobos and Deimos No rings Cannot support life Mars rover

11 VENUS Almost same size as Earth Second closest to the Sun One day = 243 Earth years Orbits Sun in 225 Earth Days Volcanic Surface Carbon dioxide, Nitrogen No moons No rings No life Temperature of 900 degrees Fahrenheit

12 MERCURY Closest to the Sun Rocky planet One day = 59 Earth Days Orbits Sun in 88 Earth Days No moons No rings No life Temperature of 800 degrees Fahrenheit daytime Temperature of -290 degrees Fahrenheit at night

13 NEPTUNE Eighth planet from the sun One day = 16 hours Orbits Sun in 165b Earth years Hydrogen, helium, and methane Made of water, ammonia, and methane 13 moons 6 rings Cannot support life

14 URANUS Seventh planet from the sun 1,8 billion miles One day = 17 hours Orbits Sun in 84 Earth Years Surface is water, methane, and ammonia Atmosphere is hydrogen, and helium and some methane 27 moons Faint rings Cannot support life

15 SATURN Sixth planet from the sun 886 million miles ^ One Day = 10.7 hours Orbits Sun in 29 Earth Years Gas planet- hydrogen, helium 53 known moons – 9 waiting confirmation 7 rings Connot support life, however the rings conditions may

16 JUPITER Named after the most important deity in both greek and roman Fifth planet 484 million miles from the sun One day = 10 hours Orbits Sun in 12 Earth years No solid surface – made of gas Hydrogen, helium 50 known moons, 17 awaiting confirmation Faint ring Cannot support life, but has oceans under crusts that might support life Great Red Spot – Gigantic storm

18 ASTEROIDS Solid, rocky irregular bodies No atmospheres No rings Cannot support life One day is 4.6 hours Orbits sun in 4.8 Earth years Orbits between orbits of Mars & Jupiter known as Asteroid Belt

19 COMETS Days very from 2.2 to 7.4 Earth days Warms as it nears the Sun No rings No moons Frozen gas, rock and dust Cannot support life but may have brought water and organic compounds
