2 Joseph Lister’s Childhood. Born on April 5, 1827 His parents are Isabella Harris and Joseph Jackson Lister. Fourth of seven children. At the age of five, his father was inducted into the Royal Society. Attended two private Quaker schools, one at Hitchin and one at Grove House in Tottenham.

3 Lister’s College Life. Lister was 17, enrolled at University College in London. In three years, he earned his bachelor of arts degree. He remained at the university to study medicine. In 1852, he earned his medical degree. His was a qualified surgeon when he left the university.

4 Lister’s life after college. Lister became a surgeon. He married his professors wife. He published two papers; One called, “Observations on the Contractile Tissue of the Inc,” and Observations on the Muscular Tissue of the Skin. Sharpey recommended Lister to a professor of clinical surgery of the University of Edinburgh. The Royal Society of London published a series of three papers by Joseph Lister. Lister was only at the age of 33 when all this happened.

5 Between 1860 and 1897. Lister was Regius Professor of Surgery in Glasgow. Lister decided that infection wounds was caused by the atmosphere. He returned to Edinburgh to succeed his former mentor and father-in-law in the chair of clinical surgery. Lister knighted and was made a peer, which Lister called Baron Lister of Lyme Regis. He also was made president of the Royal Society and that lasted about five yars.

6 Death. Joseph Lister sadly died on February 10, 1912, at the age of 85.
