2 Key Truth Answers Lesson Four
The three main Christian creeds are the APOSTLES Creed, the NICENE Creed and the ATHANASIAN Creed. The Bible says God created all things from NOTHING in SIX days. He made humans without sin, that is, in the IMAGE OF GOD. God still cares for his world normally by natural means, but sometimes by MIRACLES. He created ANGELS to serve his believers and promises us he will work everything out for OUR GOOD.

3 Opening Prayer Opening Prayer: Dear Savior, what a mess this world has become! To think that you made it as a perfect place! Now the results of sin seem to infect every part of our lives from the way we're born to the distorted pictures we sometimes have about death. Even dogs and cats now get sick and die! The whole world is hurt. Jesus, that's why the whole world needs you. You're the only one who can make things right. By living for me and dying for me, you can promise me a perfect life with God. I know my life will never be perfect on earth, but I also know that you have done everything necessary for me to have a perfect life when I leave this earth! Thank you! Keep me strong in this faith by this study of your Word. Amen.

4 Oops! Introduction: Have you ever broken or ruined something that was valuable to another person? Perhaps you dropped a china cup that meant a lot to your mother because she had inherited it from her grandmother. Or perhaps you spilled some chocolate ice cream or spaghetti sauce on the expensive carpet at your aunt’s house. (Or pick out an old story about something that your youth broke). When something like that happens, you wish you could have a second chance so you could erase your mistake. If you were given a second chance, you would certainly be more careful. But once something like that has happened and the cup is broken or the carpet is stained, there is no second chance [Click to next slide]

5 GOD PROMISED TO SAVE SINFUL MANKIND
LESSON 5 GOD PROMISED TO SAVE SINFUL MANKIND That is also the way it was with God’s creation – it was all ruined by just one mistake. But instead of throwing it all away. God provided a perfect repair through the work of his Son Jesus. In today’s lesson we will look at how the world was ruined by sin, and how God provided a solution for the problem of sin. Let’s start by looking at how Sin entered the world. [Click to next slide]

6 HOW SIN ENTERED THE WORLD

7 Genesis 1:31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.
Question – According to this passage, how was creation described after God was all done? Answer – It was very good or perfect. There was no evil or sin in God’s perfect world. Even the angels were perfect. (Note - We are not sure when angels were created (Best guess – Day 4) but it was sometime during the six days of creation because Scripture describes them as created spiritual beings who had at that time a free will to obey or disobey the LORD.) In the beginning all of the angels were perfect and obedient to the LORD. Sadly, something tragic happened soon after God was finished. Let’s look at some passages which describe this.

8 2 Peter 2: 4,9 4For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment. . . Then the Lord knows how to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment. [Have your youth read the passage] Question: According to this passage what did some angels do soon after creation? Answer: They sinned. [Click to next slide]

9 Jude 1:6 6And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home--these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. [Have your youth read the passage] Here is another passage which describes the evil angels’ disobedience. We are not told what their sin exactly was. Suffice to say that in complete arrogance they disobeyed God. Scripture describes both good and evil angels as having different ranks similar to our military system of rank and order. It also explains that there is a static number of angels. (People don’t turn into angels when they die and angels don’t procreate). The angels who sinned were certainly all responsible for their own disobedience but there was at least one prominent ringleader. Read the next passage to find out who that was. [Click to next slide]

10 1 John 3:8 8… the devil has been sinning from the beginning.
[Have your youth read the passage] Question – According to this passage who was that ringleader? Answer – The devil. The name devil means liar. Remember Jesus called the devil the “Father of Lies.” We will see how skilled as a liar he really is. Another name for the Devil is Satan. This name means “enemy.” Since his Fall in the beginning he has been God’s enemy and continues to be ours today. It was only natural for Satan to exact revenge on the crown of God’s creation – humans. Let’s see how he did that. [Click to next slide]

11 HOW SIN ENTERED THE WORLD
1. Some angels disobeyed God and now live as demons under the leadership of the devil (liar) or Satan (enemy). [Have your youth fill in the answers] [Click to next slide]

12 Genesis 2:15-17 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die." [Have your youth read the passage] Question: According to this passage, what one command did God have for Adam and Eve? Answer: He commanded them not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. [Click to next slide]

13 Genesis 3

14 Genesis 3 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" 2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' " 4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." [Have your youth read the passage] [You may want to read all of Genesis 3 at this time.] Question: The devil in the form of a serpent twisted the truth and outright lied (remember that is what his name means) to Adam and Eve. What did he tempt them to do? Answer: He tempted them to eat from the tree and to disobey God’s one command. [Click to next slide]

15 HOW SIN ENTERED THE WORLD
1. Some angels disobeyed God and now live as demons under the leadership of the devil (liar) Satan (enemy). 2. The devil tempted Adam and Eve to disobey God. [Have your youth fill in the answers] [Click to next slide]

16 Genesis 3:6-7 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves [Have your youth read the passage] Question: According to this passage, what did Adam and Eve do? Answer: They disobeyed the Lord. (Sometimes the following questions come up: “Why did God put the tree there in the first place? Or, why did God let Satan do this? Suffice to say that God did not want to create robots who would obey him. He lovingly gave the angels, Adam and Eve the freedom to obey or disobey him. He also gave them a wonderful way to say thanks to him for all that he had done. He gave them one command. Sadly, they chose to disobey him rather than thank him.) [Click to next slide]

17 HOW SIN ENTERED THE WORLD
1. Some angels disobeyed God and now live as demons under the leadership of the devil (liar) Satan (enemy). 2. The devil tempted Adam and Eve to disobey God. [Have your youth fill in the answers] [Click to next slide] 3. Adam and Eve deliberately disobeyed God

18 Genesis 5:1-3 1 This is the written account of Adam's line. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. 2 He created them male and female and blessed them. And when they were created, he called them "man." 3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. [Have your youth read the passage] Question: According to verse 1 in whose image were Adam and Eve created? Answer: God’s (An easy one just in case they were falling asleep – Ha!) This image was characterized by perfection. They had a perfect relationship with God. Then they sinned and lost that relationship. Question: According to verse 3 whose image did their children now have? Answer: Adam and Eve had children in their own image and likeness. This does not mean that they had a family resemblance. Rather, this passage explains that things were different. Since Adam and Eve had sinned, their children would bear the curse of sin too. We’ll talk about this more in a bit. [Click to next slide]

19 HOW SIN ENTERED THE WORLD
1. Some angels disobeyed God and now live as demons under the leadership of the devil (liar) Satan (enemy). 2. The devil tempted Adam and Eve to disobey God. [Have your youth fill in the answers] [Click to next slide] 3. Adam and Eve deliberately disobeyed God and lost God’s image.

20 Application Questions
Agree or disagree? The devil can never tell the truth. He is the father of lies, but he can use the truth to accomplish his evil purposes. An example would be: He can accuse me of a sin which I have committed – that is true. I have sinned. But his purpose is to make me doubt God’s forgiveness. That is a lie. God has forgiven me for everything I have done wrong. [Click to next slide]

21 Application Questions
Evaluate. Frank said, “If the angels were created with superhuman wisdom and power, and if the devil is an angel, then the devil must be very powerful and wise.” He is very powerful and wise. However, his power and wisdom is limited. Probably his biggest deceptive tactic is to fool people into believing that he is as powerful as God. He is not. He knows much, but he is not all-knowing. He can know what is happening in many places through his numerous evil angels but he cannot be at all places at all times. He can have a thorough knowledge of the past but an unclear picture of the future. Of course the flipside is for us to underestimate his power and wisdom he is a formidable foe. [Click to next slide]

22 What is tempting you? What are some common lies that Satan uses to tempt people today? Take the time to talk about a specific temptation that you are concerned about in your youth’s life. And by all means they are out there. Here are a few that come to mind: Materialism Smoking / Drugs Music piracy Pornography Remember that temptation in itself is not sin. Giving in to temptation is a sin. Talk about some ways you can avoid temptation.

23 THE RESULTS OF SIN Let’s now look at the results of sin coming into the world. [Click to next slide]

24 Psalm 51:5     5 Surely I was sinful at birth,        sinful from the time my mother conceived me. [Have your youth read the passage] Question: According to this passage, when was I first guilty of sin in God’s eyes? Answer: At conception and birth. We were born in a sinful condition. This is therefore called original or inherited sin since it is passed down from parents to children. [Click to next slide]

25 THE RESULTS OF SIN We are all born in a sinful condition
(original or inherited sin) [Have your youth fill in the answers] [Click to next slide]

26 Matthew 15:19 19For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. [Have your youth read the passage] Question: This inherited sin corrupts the heart. What sort of things come out of our sinful heart? Answer: evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony and slander. The list could go on of course. Basically we could call them sinful actions. [Click to next slide]

27 THE RESULTS OF SIN We are all born in a sinful condition
(original or inherited sin) 2. We commit sins against God every day (Actual Sin) [Have your youth fill in the answers] [Click to next slide]

28 Romans 5:12 12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned-- [Have your youth read the passage] Question: According to this passage what is one sad result for all people because of sin being in the world. Answer: Death has come to all people. [Click to next slide]

29 Romans 6:23 23For the wages of sin is death,
[Have your youth read the passage] Question: What is it that people deserve as a wage or payment for their sins? Answer: They deserve death. [Click to next slide]

30 2 Peter 2:4,9 4For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell,[a] putting them into gloomy dungeons[b] to be held for judgment; if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment. [Have your youth read the passage] Peter explains that God is just in demanding punishment for sin. He justly punished the angels when they sinned. Question: According to verse 9, what does he promise to do to a person who is unrighteous? Answer: He promises to hold them for the day of judgment and punish them.

31 THE RESULTS OF SIN We are all born in a sinful condition
(original or inherited sin) 2. We commit sins against God every day (Actual Sin) 3. We deserve God’s punishment and eternal death [Have your youth fill in the answers] [Click to next slide]

32 Genesis 3:16-19 16 To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." [Have your youth read the passage] Question: According to this passage what would life be like for women after the fall into sin? Answer: Pain in childbirth and also husbands would rule over their wives. (Note this last part basically means that many husbands would no longer lovingly serve and lead their families. Rather they would be like sinful dictators who would rule with an iron fist. You could point to the unloving way many treat their wives these days – sadly this is not just a Muslim thing – we even see it in our society.) [Click to next slide]

33 Genesis 3:16-19 17 To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' "Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return." [Have your youth read the passage] Question: According to this passage, what would life be like for men after the fall into sin? Answer: Pain, hard work, and death [Click to next slide]

34 THE RESULTS OF SIN We are all born in a sinful condition
(original or inherited sin) 2. We commit sins against God every day (Actual Sin) 3. We deserve God’s punishment and eternal death [Have your youth fill in the answers] Illustration: When you sprain an ankle or break a leg, when you are sick with the flu, when you have to wear glasses because everything is hazy without them, when tears come to your eyes as you see a family member wracked with pain, then remember why there is suffering in the world. It’s because Satan led Adam and Eve into sin. [Click to next slide] 4. We suffer pain and sadness because of sin

35 Romans 8:19-22 19The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. 20For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. 22We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. [Have your youth read the passage] Question: This section personifies creation as waiting to enjoy its perfected status which it had at one time. According to verse 20 why is it “frustrated?” Answer: It is frustrated because it lost its perfection with the fall into sin. [Click to next slide]

36 THE RESULTS OF SIN We are all born in a sinful condition
(original or inherited sin) 2. We commit sins against God every day (Actual Sin) 3. We deserve God’s punishment and eternal death [Have your youth fill in the answers] [Click to next slide] 4. We suffer pain and sadness because of sin 5. All of nature lost its perfection with the fall into sin

37 Application Questions
Which of these items is a reminder to you of the fact that the devil ruined God’s creation by leading Adam and Eve into sin? Why or why not? Thunderstorms and tornadoes Tornadoes, weeds, and a bad cold would all remind us of the ruined creation, because they all involve suffering or destruction. Watching the sunset isn’t a reminder of the ruin of creation because God created the sun to “rise and set.” Watching a football game would not be a reminder unless someone was injured during the game. Watching a program on television could be a reminder if, for example, the program shoed any suffering or people involved in sinning. [Click to next slide] The weeds that grow in lawns and gardens Watching the sunset in the evening A bad cold Watching a hard-fought football game

38 Application Questions
For Sharing – When you think of all the consequences of sin being in the world what is especially troubling to you? You may talk about how hard it has been to see loved ones suffer a severe sickness. You may talk about broken relationships because of sin. You may just talk about how “difficult” work is because of the people you work with. The list is endless but up to you to make it personal. 42 Genesis 3:15 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." [Have your youth read the passage] Soon after Adam and Eve fell into sin God promised to send someone to defeat Satan. As God is speaking to the Devil, Adam and Eve overhear a wonderful promise! Someone would come to crush the serpent’s head. Remember what happens when you step on a snakes head – it dies! Question: Who did God promise would deal this fatal blow to Satan? Answer: One of Eve’s offspring. God would slowly reveal through his prophets who that offspring would be, where he would be born, how he would be born, and to whom he would be born. They also described what he would do once he would be born. The offspring of the woman – Jesus the Messiah, would live, suffer, die and rise again for the whole world’s sin. (If your youth has seen the Passion of the Christ – make mention of the fact that the movie alludes to this fact when Jesus steps on the Serpent's head in the Garden of Gethsemane) [Click to next slide]

my sins Jesus’ holiness [Have your youth fill in the answers] Christ’s life met the demands of God’s Law. He never sinned in thought, speech, or action. But in this gracious exchange, God gives us credit for Christ’s holy life. And he gives Christ credit for our sinful life. Therefore on the cross, we see Christ getting punished for our sins. You could diagram this gracious exchange like this. Jesus took our sins on his shoulders, and along with that he took the end result of sin – the ultimate punishment of separation from God. On the cross Jesus cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46) We, in turn, receive Christ’s holiness. When God looks at us he sees people who are holy – without sin. We will then receive the reward that goes with this holiness – eternal life. [Click to next slide] God’s Great Exchange

49 John 1:29 29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! [Have your youth read the passage] Question: This helps us understand why John the Baptist was so excited when he saw Jesus. What did John call him? Answer – the Lamb of God Question: What would he do as the lamb of God? Answer: Take away the sin of the world! In the old testament God used sacrifices to remind his people that something would have to die for them in order inherit eternal life. He also required that those sacrifices be perfect and without any physical blemishes. He did this to remind them that they needed a perfect sacrifice. [Click to next slide]

[Have your youth read the passage] Acts 16 tells us about two of Jesus followers who were imprisoned for preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. After singing hymns and praying an earthquake caused the prison doors to open but no one tried to escape. Their jailer was ready to commit suicide for allowing prisoners to escape, but Paul and Silas told him to stop. He then came running to them with the guilt of his sin. He asked them, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” Question: According to this passage, what did they tell him? Answer: Believe in Jesus. [Click to next slide]

55 Application Questions
Evaluate this statement: God promised to send a Savior for the world rather than to destroy the world and start over again because God couldn’t stand to have Satan laugh at him for destroying what he had created. God promised to send a Savior because of his great love for the people he had created (see John 3:16), not because of anything the devil might think or do.

56 Closing Prayer Dear Father, thank you for showing me your perfect justice. You demanded that my sin be paid for, like any just judge would. But you also sent your Son to pay my penalty. No, I will never be perfect in this life. But, by faith in your Son, you declare me not guilty and call me your own. Help me to live like I belong to you! Amen.
