Herodotus says, "The Parians, having propitiated Themistocles with gifts, escaped the visits of the army." Weust The word “propitiation” itself means “that which propitiates” ---. Its also means “place of propitiation.” Our Lord Jesus Christ is both the propitiation and the place of propitiation. Marchbanks That which propitiates is Christ himself. The idea is “the one who paid the price” or “to make satisfaction for” This is the satisfaction of God’s character of righteousness, holiness, & justice which must be satisfied so as to make payment sufficient for the redemption of every human being on the planet. R. Henderson 2/03/08 Lesson # 5 7 Christ is propitious in His very nature Hebrews 2:17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. propitiation – propitious – a verb For this reason it was an obligation for Him in all things to be made like His brethren, in order that He might become a compassionate and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, with a view to offering that sacrifice for the sins of the people that would perfectly meet the demands of God's justice Wuest Hebrews 8:12 “For I will be merciful to their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more." merciful – propitious - an adjective because I will be merciful in the case of their unrighteousnesses, and their sins I will in no wise remember anymore. R. Henderson 2/03/08 Lesson # 5 8 Summary Redeemed – The one who has been redeemed is one who has had the debt paid in full and that payment has been recognized and acted upon by the captive / debtor and by the ones holding him captive. V. Peterman Reconciled – By the death of Christ on its behalf, the whole world is thoroughly changed in its relation to God. But God is never said to be reconciled to man. The world is so altered in its position respecting the holy judgments of God through the cross of Christ that God is not now imputing their sin unto them. The world is thus rendered savable. L. S. Chafer Propitiation - this is the satisfaction of God’s character of righteousness, holiness, & justice which must be satisfied so as to make payment sufficient for the redemption of every human being on the planet, the payment sufficient to effect the forgiveness of the whole world,& to declare each one righteous (justification). God was completely satisfied in this regard in the death of Jesus Christ. V. Peterman
