Installing and Troubleshooting Hardware Device and Drivers Chapter 6 powered by dj

Chapter Objectives  Install and Configure New Device  Install Drivers and Driver Signing  Troubleshoot Drivers problem  Update, Roll Back and Uninstall the Drivers powered by dj

Recall  User Account Control (UAC) is a technology and security feature introduced with Windows Vista  A guest account is an account for users who don't have a permanent account on a computer  Password acts as a defensive mechanism against unauthorized access to files and folders  A Password Reset Disk is a method of recovering a password  A Parental Controls feature is used to restrict certain website to protect the children and young adults from all the environments while using Internet powered by dj

Installing and Configuring New Device  The system BIOS has to be capable enough to respond to Plug and Play and power management events  The operating system has to be capable of responding to Plug and Play events  The device that you are installing should have the capability of identifying itself  The driver of that particular device should be capable to interact with the Operating System and respond to the device notification and power management events powered by dj

 Practical Activity: Demonstrate a procedure to install a scanner using the Plug and Play feature. (20 min) powered by dj

Installing and Configuring a Plug and Play Device  The progress of Plug and Play operations in the form of pop-up message which appear in the notification area  A Driver is software that allows your computer to communicate with the hardware or any other device which you wish to install or use  Drivers come with Windows or can be easily found by accessing Windows Update in the Control Panel and by checking for updates powered by dj

Installing Drivers and Driver Signing  Basically two types of driver:  Signed – Includes a digital signature  Unsigned – Do not have a digital signature  Installation of unsigned drivers might affect the computer screen as it may turn blue  While installing a device driver, window vista checks for the digital signature powered by dj

 Practical Activity: Demonstrate the procedure to install a driver manually. (10 min) powered by dj

Driver Signing  Signed by Windows Signing Authority  Signed by trusted publisher  Signed by untrusted publisher  Signed by publisher of unknown trust  Altered  Unsigned powered by dj

Working with Windows Update Driver Settings and Updating Drivers  Updating drivers involves replacing the old drivers with the recent versions of drivers  Version number is used to determine whether the driver is an update of the previous version  To get all the driver updates, you'll need to turn on recommended updates  When a new device drive is connected, it check for drivers automatically and also asks for permission to perform or not to perform a check for new drivers powered by dj

 Practical Activity: Demonstrate a procedure to update drivers from the Internet and turn on recommended updates. Introduce Windows Update Driver settings. Demonstrate a procedure to configure Windows Update Driver settings. (30 min) powered by dj

Troubleshooting Drivers  The device the driver does not work  The device the driver manages work unsteadily  Windows Vista encounters a STOP error when the device is being used  While using the device you are prompted with warning dialog boxes  Installing a new driver makes a stably working computer unstable powered by dj

Uninstalling and Rolling Back a Drivers  Enables to use the previous version of a hardware driver only when the driver you are using causes system instability  If the previous version does not exist, the Roll Back Driver button will not be active  There are situations wherein a user cannot rollback a driver powered by dj

 Practical Activity: Demonstrate a procedure to roll back a device driver. Ask the students to perform a procedure to uninstall a driver. (20 min) powered by dj

Summary I  Plug and Play provides ease of support for installing devices on computers in your network. Using Plug and Play the installation is automatic  While installing a signed or unsigned driver you need to give your consent in the UAC dialog box to continue installation  A Driver is software that allows your computer to communicate with the hardware or any other device which you wish to install or use powered by dj

Summary II  A digital signature is an electronic signature that is used to authenticate the identity and integrity of a set of files  Updating drivers involves replacing the old drivers with the recent versions of drivers  Troubleshooting drivers is useful for determining which hardware device driver is creating a problem in the stability of the system powered by dj

Summary III  Driver rollback enables you to use the previous version of a hardware driver when the driver you are using causes system instability. This feature can be used if the previous version of the driver had been installed  The drivers that are on the vendor’s website are always the latest ones then the ones which are available through Windows Update  Windows Update Driver Settings checks for drivers automatically as and when a new device is connected powered by dj

Summary IV  The Last Known Good Configuration boot option can be used if the recent driver installed restricts Windows Vista from finishing the boot process  When a particular hardware is not working on any of the Operating Systems, then there is a problem with the hardware  To make a device functional, you can enable a device. By default all the devices are enabled when they are installed powered by dj

Summary V  If the device is not used frequently or you want to avoid the usage or hardware resources or if its driver is causing instability problem, you can disable the device powered by dj
