2 Why is this topic important? Working experience and employability: needs of Chinese and non-Chinese students in SCCS and beyond. “Social laboratory” for students to understand Chinese society and work with stakeholders “Manifesto for Public Engagement” signed by the University requests all School’s actions Needs of Chinese community development

4 What have we done so far? Nottingham Student Network for Chinese Migrants (2010) Collaboration with Dr LIU Kaiming (ICO) on the empowerment of Chinese migrant workers in China and the UK (RDF project) Strategic links with stakeholders 0 within university, local councils, NGOs and Chinese community organisations, etc. Annual Fund Project, NCI network and NAA Module A special panel within IFCCS4 with theme: University engagement with Chinese society.

5 What does NCI do? Promoting global citizenship education In the UK, China and beyond Fostering cross-cultural communication between Chinese and non-Chinese communities Liaising with stakeholders for Chinese community development, social cohesion/integration and empowerment of vulnerable migrants Hosting/supporting the Nottingham Advantage Award (NAA) module and voluntary students to deliver their projects Creating opportunities for Chinese and non-Chinese students to develop their working experience, skills, competencies, entrepreneurship

6 Outline of NAA Module Aims: – Citizenship in the context of globalisation and China’s rise – Knowledge, experience and skills to work with Chinese community – Cooperation and contribution of stakeholders at different levels – Opportunities for students to design and deliver their own projects Structure: (2 x 10 credits leading to NAA Awards) – Autumn: 6 seminars, 2 workshops 9 field visits, project proposals – Spring: 4 seminars, community survey, project delivery – Summer: 2 workshops and internship opportunities

7 Progress and outcomes Delivery of 6 guest lectures successfully Attractiveness to students 31:45 Wide participation: 16 schools, UG & PG Workshop: exercising global citizenship Student projects: 8 proposals

Future of NCI: Should be registered as an independent social enterprise or part of SCCS/university affiliation?
