Practice Winding Goal Wind inner layer of SQXF short version coil to –Test L1 end parts designed by BEND –Experience the cable windability Use the HQ winding mandrel as a baseline –FNAL-supplied mandrel spacer (120 mm -> 150 mm) eliminates need for significant tooling fabrication Some tooling was modified or adjusted –All the parts were epoxy printed (SLA) through rapid prototyping machine. 2

Practice Winding Model 3 Need to modify clamping rig mount positions and hole locations FNAL supplied spacer to fill space from 120mm to 150mm dia needs modification for mounting to HQ mandrel
4
Winding setup and procedure Use HQ winding traveler as the guidance 30 lbs winding tension 4

Cable 25 m long QXF Cable wrapped with E-glass tape, the average insulation thickness is 0.15 mm Winding with the tool, no popped strands 5

Fluffy Coil 8 Low winding tension Short coil has bigger end effect. Off mid-plane by 10 mm

L1 LE 9 After compression very hard on LE, we can install the saddle and all the end parts fit better.

Experience from the winding The insulated cable (1045Z-13) was stable Coil is very fluffy, although it is due to low winding tension and short coil end effect, the flexible end parts are needed. Some of the parameter may need to be adjusted during 2 nd iteration of the end parts. We will try 4 IL parts with different angle during 1 m SQXF coil. 15
