Chapter 2

Important to know that language was around long before writing  Writing was invented to reflect what language does  The English spelling for many words does so necessarily represent the sounds that word  K represents [k] for kit  K does not represent [k] in knit

 /i/ Miley Field Tree  /u/ Moose flute Suit

 G Gaga Giant Garage  S Soccer His Cohesion

 Unlike in English the phonetic alphabet has a single symbol to represent a single sound. Some sounds are similar which is why it is important to analyze and inspect your pronunciation to correctly match the sound with the appropriate symbol.  Can be especially useful in learning a language  Useful to learn dialect Ex: [Foto] for photo Ex: [SkwId] for squid

 Simply, transcribing is the act of transforming or representing a word with the phonetic symbols that represent the sounds in the word. bee= [bi]boat=?Name=??? boo=[bu]bat=? bait=[bet]bought=? boy=[boi]cream=? city=[sIti]

 Some letters are not represented with a symbol.  For instance C is represented by the sounds [s] or [k]. C does not need a symbol representing it because the sound is already represented.  Transcription can be performed backwards from phonetic or orthographic  [gUd]=?  [tren]=?

 Your text book discusses Broad transcription as a basic or broad way of capturing sounds with symbols  P is [ph] followed by /e/  Test for nasalization by holding your nose as you speak  Practice on page 12
