2 Modern Presidency – 2 nd pd. Roosevelt, youngest president ever at age 42 Progressive president He saw presidency as a bully pulpit, influenced the news media and shape legislation Square Deal – Roosevelt’s progressive reforms

3 Trustbusting – 1 st pd.

4 1902 Coal Strike – 2 nd pd. Penn. coal miners went on strike They demanded 20 percent raise, 9 hour workday’s, and a right to form a union. Roosevelt tried to bargain with mine operators and they refused. Roosevelt’s actions reflected progressive belief that disputes could be settled in an orderly way with the help of experts.

5 Railroad Regulation – 2 nd pd. Roosevelt’s real goal was federal regulation Congress passed a act which denied/did not allow wealthy rail road owners from fixing high prices by dividing the business The Hepburn act of 1906 limits distribution of free rail road passes, form of bribery Congress passed the Elkins act in 1903 which made it not allowed for officials to give rebates for using railroads

6 Food and Drug – 2 nd pd. Roosevelt investigated the meat packing industry – passed the Meat Inspection Act Food/Drug – Advertising: claimed that some items cured cancer and to growing hair – Medicines contained opium, cocaine or alcohol – Congress passed the Pure Food and Drug Act (truth in labeling on products)

7 Conservation/Nat. Resources – 2 nd pd. Government paid little attention to the nations natural resources. Government did nothing when private interests took wilderness. Roosevelt set aside tons of land for forest reserve, water power, wild life sanctuaries and national parks.
