LHCb MUON MPWC STATUS OF TOOLING, SITES, PRODUCTION AND MATERIAL PROCUREMENT

LNF All the tools have been transferred in the clean room in August The goal is to have 4 working final chambers by the end of October (PRR). The material for these chambers is in our hands The glueing of HV bars on panels has started (7/20 panels done) with good results (1 panel/day) The tooling has to be completed (4 lines instead of 1) This week we have started the setup of the remaining tool: wiring machine soldering machine (ready) wire tension measurement (ready, work done by Rome1) final glueing table The automatic glue dispensers have to be still prepared, as well as some (useful) aside small tooling

..besides production and tooling… angular elements for gas and positioning under production (type for R3-R4 regions); new mould for the angular elements for the inner regions under preparation; drawings for the moulds for panels M2-M4-M5 ready and the tender should start this week; material for HV distributors under procurement; organize material procurement for PNPI First prototype of honeycomb panel for M1R3/R4 received from a company in Southern Italy (activity triggered by GEM people): first attempt is quite satisfactory (+- 80 micron) Budgetary quotation : 100 SF/each 80 kSF for the ~800 panels needed (M1R2-R3-R4)

22 PANELS 2,600 measurements = 9.1 mm rms = 0.02 mm total width = 0.1 mm

FE-FI-PZ Clean rooms are under preparation FE : most of the tooling is ready (the WTM under preparation in Rome1) FI : most of the elements of the tooling have been ordered PZ : the gluing machine is there (although to be sligthly modified) All the HV bars and pads drawings are nearly completed (FI)

CERN - PNPI CERN has started the pre-production 4 chambers M3R2 should be ready by mid October (PRR). The tooling is ready and well tested PNPI has received the tooling from CERN at the end of August and its installation is undergoing In October CERN people will setup it and and train the personnel PRR could be done in November My opinion is that each site has collected ~ 2 months of delay respect to the schedule prepared in January ’03 Some further delay could come from material procurement Furthermore, I have the impression that, if there are no surprises, and with a full set of working tools, there is room to recover the time lost.

Material Procurement We ordered material for 15+15 chambers (PNPI+LNF, M3R4+M3R3) Panel production is going on (300 for PNPI, Fr4 foils available + 100 for INFN) with very good results We are ready to order the rest of the material (if money available) It is clear also that we cannot wait for the final tender for the production (PNPI + INFN sites). Optimistically we could get the material from the big tender only in March We ask the permission to start small CORE orders to fill the time gap (these elements will cost some 10-20% more)

CORE money received by CSN1 100 kE (LNF) for preseries procurements (spent) 241 kE (LNF) tender of panels (waiting for completion of pre production) 280 kE (FE) for Cu-cathodes (we have good reasons to go for a single tender: Cu cathodes+Pads+HV bars 880 KE needed) Money needed for the construction (besides cathodes) ’03-’04-’05 212 kE for all the rest (frames etc…) 80 kE for the rest of the wire (the bulk is paid by CERN) 153 kE for PNPI production centers A possible scenario (if the money is available in 2003) is : ~ 500 kE for the completion of the cathodes tender ~ 100 kE for preseries and production In 2004: ~ 150 kE for production ~ 70 kE for PNPI production centers
