 This is a device used to present information from the computer system.

 Hardcopy: Output on a tangible medium  Softcopy: Output that is volatile / temporary

 Requires the use of mechanical force in order to create prints.

 Daisy Wheel Printer  Consists of a metallic wheel of characters arranged on individual flexible spokes.  Prints created when a hammer strikes a spoke, presses on an inked ribbon.  Obsolete

 Dot Matrix Printer  Prints created when very small print wires from the print head strikes an inked ribbon.  Prints consists of dots.  Advantage: Can create duplicate carbonized copies on printing.  Disadvantages: Noisy, low quality prints, black mainly prints.

 Line printer  Prints created when a print hammer strikes characters on a drum/belt/chain onto an inked ribbon.  Advantage: Good quality text.  Disadvantages: Noisy, text only, black prints only.

 Inkjet Printer  Prints created when ink forced out of printer head forming text or images consisting of tiny dots.  Advantage: Good quality, large colour range, relatively cheap.  Disadvantages: May smudge if prints not dry.

 Laser Printer  Prints created through the use of a laser, an electrostatic drum and toner.  Advantage: High quality, large colour range for colour variety, very fast prints, quiet.  Disadvantages: Relatively expensive especially colour variety.

 Plotters  A plotter can be used to produce high quality, accurate, A3 size or bigger drawings.  They are usually used for Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) applications such as printing out plans for houses or car parts.

 CRT  Cathode Ray Tube  Image formed on screen through the use of electron beams hitting screen surface.  Advantages: Wide colour range, fast response time.  Disadvantages: Bulky, large footprint, larger power consumption, radiation.  Becoming obsolete.

 LCD  Liquid Crystal Display  Image formed on screen by passing light through semi-crystalline substance which is embedded in screen.  Advantages: Wide colour range, fast response time, low foot print, no radiation, low power consumption.  Disadvantages: May have ‘dead pixels’.

 LED  Liquid Emitting Diode Display  Image formed on screen through the use of light emitting diodes which constitutes the screen.  Advantages: Wide colour range, very sharp image, fast response time, low foot print, no radiation, very low power consumption, less likely the have ‘dead pixels’.  Disadvantages: May be expensive.

CCRT, LCD, DLP CCRT projectors uses a combination of CRT tubes and lenses to project an image onto a screen. LLCD projectors uses an image projected from LCD panels within projector DDLP (Digital Light Processing)projectors creates the image on screen through the use of an array of mirrors.

AAdvantages: CRT best quality, LCD small and light, LCD least expensive, DLP light- weight DDisadvantages: CRT most expensive, LCD and DLP limited resolutions.
