Warm-Up Work

Literal Equations September 16

A literalequation is an equation where the variable is solved in terms of at least one different variable. Mathformulas are examples of literal equations.

Perimeter or Circumference Formulas
Can you recall a math formula from prior learning? Remember a math formula is an example of a literal equation. Area Formulas Perimeter or Circumference Formulas

A literal equation is solved in the same manner as any equation
A literal equation is solved in the same manner as any equation. You must apply the properties of equality. This means that you must perform the same operation on both sides of the equation!!!! Whatever is performed on one side of an equation MUST BE performed on the other side of the equation.

Examples Solve for x. x + y = z x – 2w = 13

You Try Solve for c. 4a + c = b C – 2b = 5a

Examples Solve for x. 2x = y = 2z

Multi-step Literal Equations
Solve the following for y z + x = 2y – 4 Solve the following for w m= wx + y

Formula Examples A = ½ BH ; solve for B V = /3 R2H ; solve for H

You Try P = 2w + 2l ; solve for w 2. C = 2πr, solve for r

Simple Interest Formula: I = Prt

Example #1: If you invest $50 at a simple interest rate of 3.5% per year for 3 years, how much interest will you earn?

Example #2: You deposited $125 in a savings account that earns a simple interest rate of 1.75% per year. You earned a total of $8.75 in interest. For how long was your money in the account?

You Do: You deposited $840 in a savings account that earns a simple interest rate of 4.5% per year. You want to keep the money in the account for 4 years. How much interest will you earn?

THINK/PAIR/SHARE Compare and contrast equations and literal equations. How are they similar? How are they different? THINK silently for 30 seconds PAIR discuss with your partner for 30 seconds SHARE with the class

Relay! The person at the front of the row should copy the problem onto their whiteboard and start solving the problem for the given variable. Once that person completes the first step, they should pass the whiteboard behind them to their next teammate. That teammate should first check the work that has been done. If you have a question about the work, discuss with your teammate in front of you. Then continue with the second step toward solving the equation. Repeat until the equation is solved for the given variable. Hold up your board when you think you have finished solving the literal equation.

Relay! Your team will earn points for correctly solving the literal equation first (3pts), second (2pts), or third (1pt). The team with the most points at the end of the relay races will win a PRIZE! QUESTIONS?

Relay Race #1 3x – 4y = 7, for x.

Relay Race #2 4b – 5 = -t, for b.

Relay Race #3 y = mx + b, for m.

Relay Race #4 ½y + a = b, for y.

Relay Race #5 𝑦+𝑎 3 =𝑐, 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑦

Relay Race #6 I = prt, for r.

Relay Race #7 5𝑥+7 𝑎 =2, 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑎

Relay Race #8 p(t + 1) = -2, for t.

Homework Workbook: p. 55 # 9 – 14 Workbook p. 56 # 23, 24, 27

Ticket Out Solve V=IR, for R. Solve p = 4 + at, for a.
Solve the following problems with your partner. You only need to turn in one sheet of paper, but make sure that both of your names are on it. Solve V=IR, for R. Solve p = 4 + at, for a. Erma has $175,000 in a retirement account that earns simple interest at a rate of 9% per year. How much interest will the money have earned after 25 years?

Quiz Return As I give the quizzes back to you, look at the ones you missed. We will go over some of the trickier ones so you can ACE your test on Wednesday!
