8 Meteorological Satellite Data Archiving System in NSMC Two IBM P690 Servers SAN storage system with 64TB disk array a IBM tape library(Capacity of 1500TB) It can meet archiving demands of the NSMC ’ s meteorological satellites data in future 8 years.
9
9 Data Archiving policy To all current and future satellites Data store on-line for three months Data store near-line for three years Migrate out of tape library after three years Dual copies for data safety.
10
10 1 Serving Mode of Meteorological Satellite Data Use DVB-S system to broadcast Satellite Data. Provide network service (retrieval and download) through internet.
11
11 2 Meteorological Satellite Data Provided to users All Level-1B Data. Higher Level Products.
12
12 Section Two Introduction of DVB-S satellite data broadcasting system
13
13 1 What’s DVB-S? DVB-S is a digital video broadcast by communication satellite system used to distribute data. USERS DVB UPLINK NSMC Broadcast China Star-1 data
14
14 2 Why we use DVB-S in China? Data network in China is still in developing. The bandwidth of network is not wide enough for data distribution. Users have to install expensive receiving system to receive meteorological satellite data directly.
15
15 3 Current Status of DVB-S System The initial purpose of DVB-S is to provide EOS-MODIS data sharing for national users. Now it become a environmental satellite data sharing platform. Since this system get into operation in the middle of 2004, over 70 users installed DVB-S user station.
16
16 Steps Jun 2004: start of operations with 6Mb to distribute MODIS data through China Star- 1 satellite.China Star-1 is positioned above 87.5E. Sep 2004: added FY-1D CHRPT, NOAA HRPT data. May 2005: added FY-2C S_VISSR data
17
17 EIRP Coverage:It cover china and around.
18
18 Advantage Flexible: configurable bandwidth, multicast. Supports more 8192 users. Fast distribution capability: 6Mb bandwidth. Could be upgraded easy if necessary. Priority: Data to be uplinked could be arranged priority.
19
19 Advantage Large coverage: China and surrounding china, Totally more 19 Asia countries are under it ’ s footprint. Low cost: Client device is very cheap.

30 Section Four Future plan
31
31 1 To improve the capability of DVB-S 1: To distribute FY2C numerical products in 2005. 2: To add data ordering function through Website so historic data can be broadcasted by DVB-S. BOD: Broadcast On Demand.
32
32 2 To provide historical satellite data service more than 20 years satellite data has been archived in NSMC SatelliteData TypeSize/FileTime Elapsed FY-1A/1BCHRPT100MB88.09-91.12 GDPT200MB88.09-91.12 FY-1C/1DCHRPT200MB99.05-now GDPT300MB99.05-now NOAA(7-17)HRPT120MB84.05-now

34
34 Historical Data Reorganize 1: Rescue the archived data. 2: Reprocess such as Q.C, location and calibration 3: Make standard 1B datasets and climate datasets 4: Store data into IBM tape library 5: Provide historical data service in Website
