2 Major Types of Software 1: System Software 2: Application Software 6

1: System Software Programs that generally perform the background tasks in a computer. These programs, many times, communicate directly to the Hardware

Application Software

2: Application Software Programs that generally interact with the user to perform work that is useful to the user. These programs generally communicate to the Hardware through the assistance of system Software

Application Software Application Software are programs that interact directly with the user for the performance of a certain type of work They generally do not communicate to the Hardware (i.e. printer, disk drive, etc) directly, but through interfaces provided by the Operating System. 10

Hardware Operating System Utility Language Translator Device Driver Scientific Apps. Business Apps. Productivity Apps. Entertainment Apps. System software Application software 11

Confusion About Classification At times two persons may disagree on Software classification For example, some call “notepad” an application Software, whereas others call it a utility, and therefore a system Software 12

Attributes of Good Application Software Easy to install, un-install –Consistent –Intuitive (Sensitive) –Configurable –Adapts to the users need Has a tutorial and a complete help manual Does not have any critical bugs 13

Classification According to the Mode in which it is Used Interactive-mode The user runs the program on the computer and keeps on interacting with the computer while the program runs –Example: Word processor 14

Batch-mode The user starts the program and the computer processes the provided data and produces results without any further intervention from the user Example: Payroll

Classification According to Application Area There are Various software which are used in the following application areas: –ReligiousReligious –Scientific/engineering/graphics –Business –Productivity (industries) –Entertainment –Educational 16

Scientific Software Simulation of natural systems –Deforestation and effect on green-house gases Simulation of artificial systems –Neural Ware (Simulator for artificial neural networks)Neural Ware –Thermo-nuclear explosions 17

18 Mathematical Software: MathematicaMathematica Can do hundreds, if not thousands of functions. Such that solving a differential equations quadratic equation, etc.

Engineering Software Computer-aided design (CAD)CAD –AutoCAD –SPICE –Virtual wind tunnels Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) Telecommunication system Software –Centrex Industrial control Software –Control program for a water treatment plant 19

Graphics & Animation Software Two types: 1. Vector graphics Treats everything that is drawn as an object Relatively small file size Example: Flash Moving graphics e.g. cartoons 20

Graphics & Animation Software 2. Bit-mapped or raster graphics Treats everything that is drawn as a bit-map Relatively large file size Example: – MS Paint – Adobe Photoshop 21

Business Applications –PayrollPayroll –General ledger –Order entry –Accounts receivable & accounts payable –Inventory control 22

E-Commerce Software Example in stock exchangeExample in stock exchange: Stock changes and rating software's. IBM’s Web Sphere Software makes the process easierWeb Sphere 23

Productivity Software Common features –Ability to simplify, automate everyday business tasks –Highly interactive and user-friendly design –Most users do not use 90% of the Software features Popular productivity Software –Word Processing-- SpreadsheetsWord Processing-- Spreadsheets –Presentations-- DatabasesPresentations Examples: MS Office, Corel WordPerfect Office, Lotus SmartSuite, Star OfficeMS Office 24

Spreadsheet Software Consist of cells arranged in rows & columns Each cell may contain numeric values, text or formulas Automation –Recalculations –Charts Common Example: Microsoft ExcelMicrosoft Excel 25

Presentation Development Software Used to prepare multimedia material for lectures & presentations to display key points, graphics, animation, or video with the help of multimedia projectors Advantages: –Easy to modify –Can be sent electronically –Its multimedia nature makes it more interesting for the audience 26

Small-Scale Databases Software Easy to use applications designed for efficient storage and fast and easy retrieval of data That data may be in the form of numbers, text, or even multimedia, i.e. sounds, graphics, animation, video Example: One may use a small database to keep track of the addresses, etc. of their business contacts such that Ms. AccessMs. Access 27

Entertainment Software Key feature: –Simple –intuitive(sensitive) Both Microsoft & Apple are pursuing a PC-as-a- personal-entertainment-hub strategy. 28

Music & Video Players Music players (WinAmp) Video/Music players (Real player, Windows Media player, QuickTime player) Media player 29

Games Many types –Educational –Strategy/Simulation –Sports –Shoot’em ups The saddest aspect: You do not need any opponents or partners to play computer games 30

Educational Software Category with probably the highest growth rate Current focus on augmenting traditional training and education methods, but it is shifting towards replacing traditional methods 31

Electronic Encyclopedias Great resource of useful information presented in a very interesting format E-Dictionaries : Ms.Encarta, BritannicaMs.EncartaBritannica Superior to the paper-based version: –Access speed –Can contain animation and sound –Much lower cost as thousand’s of pages, dozens of volumes have been replaced by a couple of CD’s 32

What We have learnt today ? 33

Application software are programs that interact directly with the user for the performance of a certain type of work and 34

35 Usage areas and Examples: Scientific/engineering/graphics Business Productivity Entertainment Educational

Home Work Collect information of different application software's use by different cellular companies. You can also use graphical representation. Submission: In Next computer Class Day : Saturday Date: 18-06-2011 36
