Definition my wordsFacts/characteristics ExamplesNonexamples Relation A relation is a set of pairs of input and output values. Anything that can be graphed and written in ordered pair form. There are multiple ways to represent a relation: Ordered Pairs Input/output table Points on a coordinate plane Mapping Equations Words (sentence) {(4,7), (3,2), (0,0), (-1,-4)}
4
Ordered Pairs We always write ordered pairs in curly braces, called Brackets, with commas in between each ordered pair. Example:
5
Input/Output Table The input is always an ____. The output is always a ____. In a vertical table, x always goes on the left. In a horizontal table, x always goes on top. Ex: x y
6
Coordinate Plane The ______ coordinate tells us to move left and right. The ______ coordinate tells us to move up and down. Examples ▪ (-3,0) ▪ (1,2) ▪ (-2,-3) ▪ (2,-1) x y
7
Mapping Diagram In the left box/oval, write all of the inputs ____. Do not repeat any values! In the right box/oval, write all of the outputs ____. Do not repeat any values! Draw an arrow from each input value to its output value. Input Output
8
Put all of the ordered pairs into the mapping diagram. {(-4,0), (-1,-2), (-1,0), (0,5), (1,5), (5,3)} Input Output

Definition in your own wordsFacts/characteristics ExamplesNonexamples Function A function is a relation where every input has exactly one output. Data in which no x value is repeated. (Vertical Line Test) If you can draw a vertical line through the graph that it more than once, it is NOT a function. We say “the relation fails the vertical line test.”

2 Assignments Function/Not a function Assignment ▪ Cut out each of the images and glue them on the green sheet in the correct section, function or not a function. Facts about Functions ▪ Identify which relationships are functions. You MUST explain why or why it isn’t a function. Ticket Out
18
What is a relation? List the 4 ways a relation can be represented. What is a function?
