10 Parents and School Librarians: Partners in Student Learning Why students need school libraries Student achievement Research in over 20 statewide studies has shown that standardized test scores of students are higher when they have access to quality school library programs with certified library staff. Statewide school library research has been conducted in the colored states.

11 Parents and School Librarians: Partners in Student Learning What students tell us about school libraries Over 88% said the school library helped them get better grades; almost 75 percent said it helped with homework, and over 92% reported computers in the school library helped improve their overall academic work. In a survey of over 13,000 Ohio students, over 99% students in grades 3 through 12 reported that school libraries and their services helped them become better learners.

12 Parents and School Librarians: Partners in Student Learning What the research on parent engagement tells us: Research shows that when parents are involved in their children’s schools, students have: higher grades, tests scores, and graduation rates, better school attendance, and increased motivation, better self esteem. “The more parents participate in schooling, in a sustained way, at every level—in advocacy, decision-making and oversight roles, as fundraisers and boosters, as volunteers and paraprofessionals, and as home teachers—the better student achievement.” Michigan Dept. of Education
