Loss of Biodiversity By: Emma & Frances

Biodiversity Biodiversity is the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem.

The loss of biodiversity The loss of biodiversity is when species become extinct due to one reason or another. Because of this, the diversity across the globe is decreasing. The loss of biodiversity is caused by the extinction of a variety of organisms due to environmental changes and human interference.

The effects of losing biodiversity  The Loss of biodiversity affects ecosystems as much as climate change, pollution and other major forms of environmental stress. As a result, there has been growing concern that the very high rates of modern extinctions, due to habitat loss, overharvesting and other human-caused environmental changes, could reduce nature's ability to provide goods and services such as food, clean water and a stable climate. Until now, it's been unclear how biodiversity losses stack up against other human-caused environmental changes that affect ecosystem health and productivity.

 In ecosystems where species losses is 21 to 40 percent of species. Species loss is expected to reduce plant growth by 5 to 10 percent. At higher levels of extinction (41 to 60 percent of species), the effects of species loss ranked with those of many other disasters causing environmental change, such as ozone pollution, acid deposition on forests and nutrient pollution.

Area Affected  Species all across the world are being affected by the results of human made hazards. For example the Passenger Pigeon, mainly located in North America, was over hunted do to the large number of birds that would darken the sky as they flew over in their flock. As the desire for meat increased people begin to hunt the pigeons and destroy their habitats. The last Passenger Pigeon died in 1914 in the Cincinnati zoo. Another example of an animal that was over hunted and killed off by humans is the Quagga. Native to South Africa, this caramel brown zebra was a major source of meet and desired for its warm fur during the 18’s. The last Quagga died in an Amsterdam zoo in 1883.

Prevention The government has put in place protected areas where human activity is limited, preventing deforestation and hunting. Regulations have been put in place to prevent over hunting. Preventing foreign plants and animals from entering an area to avoid conflict with animals already living in an area. Educating the public about the loss of biodiversity and the effects it has on our environment. Solving human caused climate change, preventing over extinction and deforestation as well as promoting satiability is the key to stop species from going extinct.
