3.10.15 How many different shades can the average person with normal vision distinguish?

Vision: Light: is electromagnetic energy Afterimages: the color’s complementary color Color Blindness: only seeing light and dark, no color. (rare)

Video http://youtu.be/AUsups6Mk3I No Such Thing As Color - what it's like to be color blind

The Eye The Eye: The Pupil: lets in light (like a camera) Pupil size is sensitive to light & emotions. Allows dark & light adaptation for up to 45 minutes

Eye continued… Lens: adjusts to the distance of objects by changing its thickness. (when people squint, they are adjusting the thickness of the lenses in their eyes)

Eye continued… Retina: sensitive surface- acts like the film of the camera Photoreceptors make it possible for the optic nerve to carry the message to the brain

Eye continued… Blind Spot: spot where optic nerve leaves the eye – this is how the information gets to the brain. Rods & Cones: Located in the retina – Rods= black & white, Cones= color

In groups of 2 You will take a variety of vision tests; color blind, after image and the color circle. You will collect data and write a reflection on how vision may vary from one person to another (anatomical reasons). Once completed you will do research using laptops to research vision in animals, which can see in color, UV, etc.

Homework Start reviewing chapters 3 & 4 Any handouts and anatomy charts given out thus far You are responsible for the content even if we did not cover it in class. That’s why you have reading homework.

Research questions Provide a list of animals that can see in color. What about bulls? Does a red cape make them angry? Does a red cape make them want to attack it? Which animals see in UV light? Which animal doesn't need eyes to see? Who can see in the dark?
