2 2 Before the Civil War ● New relatively untried invention. ● During the rebellion railroads “came of age.” ● Second only to waterways.

3 3 What were they used for? ● Transported : Soldiers, materials, and food. ● Citizens and raw materials in order to keep the war effort going.

4 4 North Vs. South Railroads ● More than 200 railroads in existence at start of war. ● ⅔ of rail lines were found in the North. ● ⅓ of rail lines were found in the South. ● North had twice the density of railroads per square mile. ● THIS GAVE NORTH AN ADVANTAGE.

6 6 Pacific Railroad Acts ● Acts that promoted the construction of a transcontinental railroad in the US. ● Missouri River -> Pacific Ocean ● Postal, military, and other services.

7 7 The Union Pacific Railroad ● Union Pacific meets Central Pacific line. ● Construction began during the Civil War (1862) ● Two lines joined together in Utah, marking the first transcontinental railroad in North America.
