3 The objectives of this webinar are to:
Introduce the need for BIM Execution Planning Pre-contract BIM Execution Planning Post-contract BIM Execution Planning Identify the critical steps to BIM Execution Planning in accordance with PAS :2013 Signpost to other resources for BIM Execution Planning The aim of this short webinar is to introduce BIM Execution Planning in accordance with PAS :2013 Specification for information management for the capital/delivery phase of construction projects using  building information modelling What we can’t do in half an hour is cover the more technical aspects of BIM generally and Execution planning specifically. This is a whistle stop tour covering a range of information with plenty of signposting to other websites and information sources. We will take some questions at the end and redirect any specific and detailed queries.

4 What is BIM ? “An integrated digital process providing coordinated, reliable information about a project throughout all phases, from design through construction and into operation” Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a process of creating and managing building data during its development. Is a three-dimensional, real-time, dynamic building modeling computer program in which you can increase productivity throughout building design and construction. This process produces the BIM, which then inter-connects the building geometry, spatial relationships, geographic information, quantities and properties with all the related building components. 5 The AEC (UK) I This BIM Protocol has been commissioned by CIC as part of its response to the UK Government BIM Strategy. The Protocol has been drafted for use on all common construction contracts and supports BIM working at Level 2. The Protocol identifies the Building Information Models that are required to be produced by members of the Project Team and puts into place specific obligations, liabilities and associated limitations on the use of the models. The Protocol can also be used by clients to require the adoption of particular ways of working – such as the adoption of a common naming standard. The Protocol adopts many of the core principles used in the preparation of the CIC Consultant Appointment and Schedules of Service, particularly that project teams perform better when there is clear responsibility for action and deliverables. This introduction and guidance sets out the principles behind the drafting of the Protocol and provides guidance with regards to its completion and use.nitiative

8 Employers Information Requirements
The Employer’s Information Requirements (EIR) form part of the appointment and tender documents on a BIM Project. Information Requirements need to be defined as part of the Employer’s Requirements.  The EIR define which models need to be produced at each project stage – together with the required level of detail and definition.  These models are key deliverables in the ‘data drops’ – contributing to effective decision making at key stages of the project. The content of the EIR covers three areas: Technical – details of software platforms, definitions of levels of detail etc Management – details of management processes to be adopted in connection with BIM on a project Commercial – details of BIM Model deliverables, timing of data drops and definitions of information purposes The EIR shall be incorporated into the tender documentation, to enable suppliers to produce their initial BIM execution plan (BEP) upon which their proposed approach, capability and capacity can be evaluated. The employer, or the employer’s representative, shall be responsible for ensuring that information requirements are included in project contracts in such a way as to avoid duplication of responsibilities.

10 BIM Execution Plan The purpose of the BIM Execution Plan is to facilitate the management of information on the project This includes the contractual information exchange requirements set out in a BIM Protocol alongside the wider project deliverables established by the contract Post contract award, the BEP shall be re-submitted by the supplier to the employer confirming the supply chain’s capabilities and the master information delivery plan (MIDP) – see and Figure 7 (6.1.5) – and that all relevant parties have agreed and committed to the BEP. Management inc: Roles, responsibilities and authorities; major project milestones; project information model deliverable strategy and authorization process; existing legacy data use; approval of information. Planning and documentation inc: Revised PIP confirming the capability of the supply chain; agreed project processes for collaboration and information modelling. The standard method and procedure inc: Volume strategy; file naming convention; agreed construction tolerances; drawing sheet templates; attribute data; The IT solution inc: software versions; exchange formats; and process and data management systems.

11 Employers Information Requirements
EIRs incorporated into tender documents Bidders submit approach to project information management Clients evaluate proposed approach, capability and capacity The Employer’s Information Requirements (EIR) form part of the appointment and tender documents on a BIM Project.

12 Pre contract BIM Execution Plan
Everything requested in the EIR plus: Project Implementation Plan (PIP) Project goals for collaboration and information modelling Major project milestones consistent with the project programme Project information model (PIM) deliverable strategy As part of the main contract selection process, the employer shall request in the EIRs that bidders shall submit details of their approach to project information management, sufficient to demonstrate the supplier’s proposed approach, capability, capacity and competence to meet the EIR. The purpose of the pre-contract BEP is to demonstrate the supplier’s proposed approach, capability, capacity and competence to meet the EIR The BEP shall enable the employer to determine if the requirements within the EIR are achievable, allowing for adjustment or negotiation of the supply chain’s capabilities if necessary. This BEP shall be submitted by the supplier to the employer on behalf of the whole supply chain and shall include a summary of their capabilities and responsibilities. Suppliers shall be responsible for the cascade of information through their supply chain.

22 Common Data Environment
Post-contract BIM Execution Plan Common Data Environment A single source of information for any given project, used to collect, manage and disseminate all relevant approved project documents for multi-disciplinary teams in a managed process A CDE may use a project server, an extranet, a file-based retrieval system or other suitable toolset.

23 CPIx BEP Templates CPIc is the Construction Project Information Committee, responsible for providing best practice guidance on the content, form and preparation of construction production information (CPI), and making sure this best practice is disseminated throughout the UK construction industry. The Committee is formed from representatives of the major industry institutions which ensures that the guidance we provide has a solid foundation within all branches of the industry Beta versions of the CPIx BIM strategy templates are available on this site to download for use. These have been developed in consultation with the government BIM Task Group and are in accordance with PAS

24 BIM Execution Plans & You?
Do you understand Employers Information Requirements? Do you understand your own capability, capacity and resources? Do you understand the capability, capacity and resources of your supply chain? How will PAS fit with your existing business process? As an SME, no matter what your role in the built environment is, it is highly likely your business will or should be involved in the BIM process whether through supplying or managing data. You may be involved directly working with a government department or indirectly with a supply chain partner who needs data as part of their contractual requirements. It is clear that BIM does offer the SME community many benefits, irrespective of their position in the construction landscape and construction supply chain – it helps to improve their working processes and remove waste at all stages of the lifecycle.
