6 Man Mechanics for the Deep Wings

PREGAME Active participant in R’s pre-game Get on same page with your other deep wing – Count signals – Count timing – Scrimmage kicks Get on the same page with your side guy Get your team’s ball

BEFORE THE GAME Introduce yourself to head coach Note location of the press box Inspect field (when visiting team goes in) Police warm-ups – Maintain presence in the “DMZ”

COIN TOSS Go with wing to get the team Stay with team until they enter the field If they come on early, go to sideline and face wing official (parade rest) If your team is kicking, take ball to U; if not, give ball to ball boy Meet crew at midfield and record coin toss results Break for kickoff position

FREE KICKS FJ has R’s restraining line; SJ has K’s Count K, signal to U and each other Signal to wing official, drop hand when he signals Bean bag in hand Responsible for 2 and 3 of K (let 1 go) Jog 10 yards with K, then let them pass you Keep 20 yard cushion with the ball (like your officiating a scrimmage play)

SCRIMMAGE PLAYS Have a pre-snap routine and use it Count before EVERY play and signal to opposite deep official Key is outside offensive player Peek at tackle to see what he does Watch for your key going out of bounds If play is away from you, clean up behind

SCRIMMAGE PLAYS- Pass Know the number of your receiver and defender Observe contact Cover the pass in your area- Man, Ball, Man (Zone) Know how receiver got out of bounds Communicate with wing official on all plays at the sideline On deep plays, verbally spot the ball for the wing Focus on receiver and where ball is going- do not ball watch

PUNTS SJ is 2 yards behind deepest receiver and positioned on the sideline FJ is 5 yards behind deepest returner, 9 yards wide Peek at ball to get trajectory, then key returner Bean bag the catch (not the muff!) Count Team B SJ watch the action around the returner (blocks) FJ has returner all the way If returner is inside the 10, get on the goal line

FIELD GOAL AND KICK TRY Underneath and slightly behind uprights- make sure you can see Rule on ball over crossbar, inside or outside upright Count Team B Know the eligible receivers and repeat them to each other If good, both come out and signal If wide, official whose side is wide on signals If short, both signal no good Hold signal until Referee acknowledges and signals SJ whistles

OTHER DUTIES Establish good ball mechanics Have a good rapport with the head coach and ball boys Take charge Be a leader – lead by example Be professional, courteous, approachable, and respectful Do your job on the field and off Hustle
