1 FOOD SECURITY WORKSHOP DAKAR - SENEGAL 07 – 10 December 2009

2 BACKGROUND  In South Africa, most food security activities were more of PCV individual efforts than post coordinated effort  PCVs together with their Counterparts have developed innovative means to address food security challenges; e.g. Working with OVCs to create Boys/Girls Garden and Nutrition ClubsWorking with OVCs to create Boys/Girls Garden and Nutrition Clubs Construction of Hydroponics gardensConstruction of Hydroponics gardens Working with Home Based Care groups to support nutritional needs for PLWHAWorking with Home Based Care groups to support nutritional needs for PLWHA Working in schools to create curriculum on healthy nuritionWorking in schools to create curriculum on healthy nurition  Most of these engagements were costly and labor intensive and yielded few crops

3 CURRENT POST INTERVENTIONS  Trained 60 PCVs and Counterparts on Perma Gardening  About 35% of people have started gardening within 30 days and have scheduled more trainings in the new year.  Post plan to integrate Perma Garden training into PST and IST

4  Food security can be integrated into all program sectors  Permaculture training is practical and easily applied  Food supply to Orphans and Vulnerable Children  Healthy nutrition for PLWHA  Income generation due to sale of surplus vegetables  Learners and youth trained in Gardening and nutritional skills  Sustainable health due to healthy eating  Access to in-country technical assistance to provide PCVs and their Counterparts with support  To link recent permaculture activities to other food security initiatives such as nutritional education for Vulnerable children and PLWHA OVERALL BENEFITS AND ADVANTAGES

5 SUCCESS STORIES  More excitement from PCVs and Counterparts  Counterparts have started training family members and creation of home gardens  More crops grown with local inputs at reasonable cost
