Food and drink A Success Story Food and Drink is key industry sector for Scotland; Scotland’s food and drink sector is growing rapidly and is on target to meet turnover of £16.5bn by 2017; Exports have grown by over 50% in the last five years; The number of employees increased last year by 21%; Retail sales of Scottish brands in the UK have risen by 36% between 2007 – 2013; Relatively low spend on Research and Development Companies in the F&B sector, like any other, need to be able to adapt to changing health trends and behaviours, as well as continuing to innovate and create new products to meet demand.

3. SCOTTISH PARADOX Scotland is a nation renowned worldwide for producing high quality food and drink and yet we struggle with world beating levels of diet-related disease and throw away a fifth of our food!

4. SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES Amongst children and adults some of the highest levels of diet-related poor health in the world. Deep-seated attitudes to food leading to poor habits and low expectations. Serious threats to global food security due, to population growth rates and climate change. A lack of diversity in exports and supply chains which lack resilience. The social, financial and environmental cost of food waste is unacceptably high.
