Bald Faced Hornet Diego Lujan Carlos Flores Entomology

The Nest The old nest of a hornet can serve other insects and spiders as a good Winter shelter. This also benefits birds, knowing that it’s a potential food source. Finally, most importantly it benefits the hornet itself. The nest serves as shelter, protection, and it allows reproduction by laying their eggs.

More Benefits Bald-faced hornets can be considered beneficial in that they reduce the population of unwanted insects. (Including other Bald-faced hornets) They also serve as pollinators for plants when searching for nectar.

DANGER The sting of a hornet is more painful to humans than typical wasp stings because a hornet’s venom contains a large amount (5%) of acetylcholine. Hornets can sting multiple times, unlike typical bees, hornets do not die after stinging, because their stinger is not pulled out of their bodies.

MORE DANGER When a hornet attacks, it releases pheromones that trigger other hornets to attack as well. When a hornet is killed, pheromones are also released. Attracting other hornets to the kill site.
