3 Walking on the moon must have felt a bit weird for Neil Armstrong.
‘Weird’ doesn’t really do it justice, actually. How might Armstrong have felt at this moment? In your exercise books, write as if you are Neil Armstrong as he takes his first steps on the moon. Use the first person. Write for two minutes.

4 Generating Ideas Watch the video below, which shows pictures of the moon from outer space. As you watch, write down words / phrases to describe the scenes in the video.

5 Read and discuss this poem about the moon, by a man called Shelley.
To the Moon ART thou pale for weariness Of climbing heaven, and gazing on the earth, Wandering companionless Among the stars that have a different birth,— And ever-changing, like a joyless eye That finds no object worth its constancy?

6 What are Shelley’s thoughts about the moon?
Do you agree? Write down your own thoughts. If you enjoyed this poem, you can find nine other moon poems online at

7 Time to get creative. Your task is to write your own tribute to the moon. It could be a poem, or a short story, or simply your thoughts and feelings. Use the ideas you have written down today to get you started. Think carefully about your vocabulary and focus on expressing yourself accurately, using words and phrases that capture your thoughts and feelings. Why not throw in a metaphor, just for fun?

8 Homework Finish your work on the moon. This is due in tomorrow (Tuesday 27th Sept.) Remember that you can find this PPT online at msnorth.wordpress.com
