4 YOUR TASK Learn as much as you can about the different symbols of the United States. Pay attention to each place you visit on your QUEST, there will be important facts to remember. The interesting facts along your JOURNEY will help you answer important questions for each SYMBOL. HAVE FUN!

7 The American Flag What colors do you see in the American Flag? How many strips does the American Flag have? What do the strips represent? How many Stars are seen on the American Flag? 8 The American Flag “OLD GLORY” This name for the flag was coined by Captain William Driver in 1831. He carried his flag wherever he went and is now buried in Nashville Cemetery. At this cemetery it is mandatory that the flag fly 24 hours a day.

10 The Bald Eagle National Bird of the United States Was taken off the ENDANGERED list in June 2007. We see the BALD EAGLE on gold coins, silver dollars, half dollars and quarters. Is the great seal of America. The BALD EAGLE represents FREEDOM.

12 The Statue of Liberty Located on Ellis Island in New York. It was a gift of friendship from France. The Statue of Liberty represents FREEDOM and DEMOCRACY Represents that the America is “THE LAND OF OPPORTUNITIES”.

14 The Lincoln Memorial Established to recognize and remember our 16 th President of the United States…ABRAHAM LINCOLN. Above the monument it reads “In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.”

16 The Washington Monument Robert Mills designed this monument for George Washington, first President of the United States, for his efforts and legacy. Mills began construction in 1848.

18 The White House Home of the President of the UNITED STATES. First President to live there was President Adams.

20 The Pledge of Allegiance In 1892 “Youth Companions” magazine published a pledge for the students to repeat on Columbus day. In 1923 a few changes were made and “MY FLAG” became “THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES.” In 1954 President Dwight Eisenhower added the words “UNDER GOD” in order to restore faith and religion.

22 The Star Spangled Banner The Star Spangled Banner was first written as a poem during the War of 1812. It was declared our Nation Anthem in 1931. The original flag, which inspired the song is at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.

23 Evaluation Tell your teammate what you have learned about U.S. symbols. Tell your teammate which U.S. symbols you like most and why. Chose your favorite American Symbol, illustrate it, and write three sentences about it.
