3 Why shouldn’t opening a bank account be as easy as buying a book online? So why shouldn’t opening a bank account be as easy as buying a book online? In the past, a bank would have dismissed it as something that didn’t apply to them.Clearly opening a bank account or buying insurance was a more complex task that had longer term consequences than the one-off transaction of buying a book.Yet today, customers expect the same level of simple and easy-to-use service that they expect from their favorite online retailer, even on more complex high-value transactions. Consumer expectations are now far reaching and experiences apply across industries. As a recent simplicity study notes, “There’s an estimated $5 billion up for grabs to those who can make health insurance as simple as a value meal” – I’ll take the number one combo please. Processes must be simple, yet powerful. And if you can’t provide this as a company, then someone else will.“An estimated $5 billion is up for grabs for the health insurer who figures out how to make health insurance as simple as ordering a value meal from a local fast food joint.”~ US Consumers Willing to Pay Five Percent More For Their Insurance
4 IBM launched Smarter Process at Impact in 2013 We’ve recognized this reality and have dedicated our focus to helping our clients acquire and retain customers more effectively and differentiate themselves through their day-to-day operations. The culmination of these efforts was the launching of Smarter Process in May at the IBM Impact event. The main goal of the Smarter Process initiative is to help you reinvent your business operations – not just merely improve them incrementally. And with the forces of mobile, social, cloud and big data, a new way to tackle traditional problems is essential. At the same time, continuing to increase the efficiency of processes must happen to gain the cost benefits and cost structure of your operations.

6 …is a Data-Driven Process A smarter process…Empower business users to collaborate and act on observed insights…is a Social Process…is a Flexible ProcessAccelerate development, deployment, adoption and changeExploit mobile devices to allow anyone to engage anytime, anywhere…is a Mobile ProcessEnable faster, better decisions in response to business situations and opportunities…is a Data-Driven ProcessSo as we saw with BMI, a smarter process is data driven, it’s also social in nature, it’s flexible, it’s mobile. Listen to a few statistics:McKinsey found that social technologies can raise the productivity of high-skill knowledge workers by up to 25%.A separate McKinsey survey estimated that European governments (think about the processes there) could save 100B euros per year just by implementing big data solutions. And there has also been an explosion of mobile processes and processes in the cloud due to the greater deployment flexibility: Gartner ranks Business Process as a Service (BPaaS) as the fastest growing cloud segment with 47% growth.

17 Client developed process BPM on Cloud is really a PaaSPlatform as a Service (PaaS) is an application development platform delivered on demand, allowing developers to focus on software design, development and deployment — without the cost and complexity of buying and managing the underlying hardware, software, provisioning and hosting.IBM BPM on CloudBYOL“Roll your ownapproach”Client developed processPaaS promises increased flexibility, lower costs and higher quality IT services, while maintaining some control over data and applicationsThere is a pressing need to make application development and operational processes more efficient. This is where PaaS holds great promise.PaaS can streamline and enhance the whole application lifecycle, from development and testing to deployment. At the same time, it can also simplify integration with other applications and greatly speed time to market. This stands to benefit the operational side of the house by improving productivity, while meeting the business imperative for increased innovation and competitiveness through differentiation at the application level.

22 Expedite time to success with BPM on Cloud The University Library leadership team had conducted a comprehensive workflow analysis and documentation effort. The leadership team was challenged by inefficiency, lack of visibility and flexibility and duplication of work, all adversely affecting customer service levels for their academic community. The procurement of databases and digital resources, was the workflow chosen for IBM’s Quick Win Project (QWP). The existing process was documented in s on different systems that were not connected. Some of the key issues with the current procurement process of database and digital resource procurement included lack of visibility into the process. The library staff was unaware of how many trials and where the trials within this university were taking place. In addition, the staff was unaware of the workload of subject librarians. Other key issues included a decentralized environment that lead to missing information and difficulty in the communication of database trial information. The University Library's goals included a highly automated workflow for licensing data from trial to production, a team-based approach for handling database and digital resource procurement throughout the entire lifecycle and on-demand visibility into process performance metrics. This library’s goals also included providing status of individual database and digital resource procurement, reducing inefficiencies and improving user experience. To achieve success, the QWP team had to reduce the reliance on human memory and , automate hands-off work and notifications and reduce the risk of lost data. Other requirements for success included promoting accessibility to and faster retrieval of existing information and improving visibility of the entire database procurement lifecycle.SolutionAfter an evaluation of vendor solutions, the University staff selected IBM’s cloud-based Business Process Management (BPM) platform, which includes comprehensive tooling for process design, implementation, monitoring and optimization. Based on this platform’s capabilities to model workflows and provide near-real-time visibility into process performance metrics, BPM methodology was determined to be appropriate for the procurement workflow of database and digital resources.Business valueThe Database Procurement Workflow solution provides the University Library's service staff visibility into the process that keeps users updated with their tasks and provides the staff with more in-depth, near-real-time process metrics. With this solution, University staff can acquire the flexibility to operate in a dynamic and changing environment, the ability to adapt to the school's schedule by changing or adding users of the process and the ability to update dynamic database information. This solution is designed to optimize the university’s database procurement process and enhance the user experience of subject librarians.IBM’s BPM on Cloud service provides the University a platform to more rapidly develop, test and deploy workflows, without the overhead of IT infrastructure. With this approach, the library and university staff can potentially eliminate the need for hardware provisioning and specialized IT skills to setup and manage enterprise systems.Quotes from University Librarian for Information Technology - the key stakeholder and sponsor for this project:"In a word: WOW! In two words: Game Changer.""It is rare to see a product actually meet expectations. Well, often they meet expectations, but there is some unforeseen problem, which one must work around. In this case, we have nothing but fabulous success, and in that, my expectations are exceeded.""I can’t wait to demo to other libraries; jaws will drop and tears are a possibility."A world-renowned academic institutionAchieves unparalleled visibility into library procurement processesCloud-based solution in place in weeks, without in-house technical skills
