Trial Adds If grade level material is in a smaller font than the functional print size, trial adds are indicated. Consider the range of add generally prescribed for the student’s distance acuity level. Provide practice/demonstration for the student in how to use the trial lenses, slowly finding the clearest image while adjusting the distance from the text.

Compare time it takes for student to complete each subtest as compared to same age peers. Note nature of errors, if any. If slower than peers or errors occur, vary format of test or introduce strategies to determine whether any are helpful. – Large Print subtests – Use of a line marker (Bright Line Reading Guide) – Use of finger-pointing strategy – Elevation or re-positioning reading material
